camping cord, nylon clothesline, cheap dollar tree stuff, cheap decorative stuff at hobby lobby... any nylon braided cord.

I hate wasting real 550 paracord too.  its strength is a bit of an overkill for making slings.  It's just such a convenient go-to.  I'm always on the lookout for cheap alternatives too.

Polypropylene.  It behaves just like paracord and lasts forever.  I've made many slings and dog leashes from it.  Good stuff.

For braiding? Jute or sisal from the hardware store.

For using as a whole cord? Old shoe strings. Especially good quality ones. Really though if you arent braiding them one hank of paracord should last a while and make a cord that will last a pretty long time.

Hey Mike,
I wonder, when you say paracord, what do you mean ?
I have actually touched 2 parachutes and the cord which was in them was / is nothing like anything I ever purchased called "paracord"
Play, experiment ! If it works for you, doesn't matter what its called.
My favourite sling is a piece of seatbelt from a nissan pickup with 2 pieces of "paracord" from the pound shop whipped on with orange plastic builders line.
Go figure !
Cheers

Garden string, you get it in 100m tins from euro stores.
I think the stuff I have is sisal.
A three strand braid can be done while watching  TV.
And it makes pretty decent cord.

Euro/pound/buck stores are Aladdin's caves full of cheap tat and many wonders Smiley

Plus I bought the really good paracord from eBay for £7 100m, as opposed to £13 on Amazon.

The other stuff I use is 2mm masons line.
Cheap And great for lightweight slings.

I used cotton office string for a fair long while. It#s perfectly serviceable and costs very little. Easy to find too. Slightly stronger than jute I would say as well. Can depend though, sometimes it can be very cheap and have a load of gritty bits in it. Avoid that stuff if you can.

I think you guys did not understand the question.
It was about something that is similar to paracord, not what you like using for slings (but Ill try some of that stuff too)

This was put in a sling discussion section. would have been better in off topic, and the question was a bit vague.

The only thing similar to paracord is paracord.
Or masons line, that's a round braided manmade fibre with no inner core.

But most round braided plastic cordage is put under the umbrella title of:  paracord.
Almost none is suitable for using in parachute manufacture, it's just become a catch-all name for modern round braided cordage.

So if you wanted round braided cordage that isn't called 'paracord' you're out of luck Smiley

Round braided  Drapery Cord.  A.k..a window or venetian blind cord.  Available in thicknesses from .109 to.25".  Cotton or poly.  Not  expensive.  I'm working up a couple of slings with it now -- spliced netted pocket...

I disagree.  This is a perfect  'sling related' discussion  and does not belong in the off-topic discussions with puppies and bad jokes and political crap.

The OP asked properly and some have chosen to mis-interpret his question.
