Big Stones - Impact Test #2
Aug 7th, 2021 at 2:43am

Here's the second video of my impact testing with big stones.  This was intended to be the last of my planned videos, but I decided to break out the final part into it's own thing.  I'm hoping to get the recording for that one done in the next week or two.

I feel like this puts the question of whether or not a helmet would save you to bed... it would not.

Nice man. Yea they are hitting pretty hard it seems. That 3lb sledge did less damage than some of those stones. So what im wondering is how would a steel helmet hold up? I think I already know the answer here but I wish we could get a blacksmithing channel to donate one for the cause.

I have a Czech army surplus helmet which I've thought about testing but... I like it too much to destroy :/

It's interesting how your throw velocity barely decreased even with very significant mass increase. In other words you were outputting way more kinectic energy with the big rocks.

I wonder how that graph would change as mass becomes lower and technique adjusts to it. You might see the KE produced go up again at a point, or tail off maybe.

@JudoP  In one of Sarosh's videos he saw a peak in his mass vs. kinetic energy. I think everyone will reach that point. I've certainly seen it in my own slinging, but don't know where the fall off is.

Edit: I just re-read your comment. It would be very interesting to see how it does for smaller stones.

@JudoP - That's a good observation.  It would be very interesting if there is a double peak across the KE range of all projectile weights.  I recall that happening with the distance slinging when my results showed a peak around the 750g point.

Great video production. Do you have any plans to try this with a conventional staff sling?

Awesome video !

The energy transmitted through the wood is incredible.
that the first egg would crack from such a high blow is amazing.

And yeah when we did destruction testing (read: lets see what we can throw through a sheet of plywood) in wyoming, I was able to put a a golfball through a half inch sheet of plywood. But with the 3/4 inch even the 1 inch ball bearings were just embedded half way through.
I don't even think I got a lead glande through the 3/4 inch.

But your video certainly demonstrates just how efficiently energy from sling impacts are transmitted through objects.

Armour won't help that much with shock transmission
Nice Thumbs Up

I didn't.  But that's a good idea.  I have some other things planned for my next couple videos, but I would eventually like to do some more in-depth exploration of throwing speed with different styles.  Although I'll finally need to dedicate some time to pirouette because that will definitely be needed.  I think adding a staff sling to this is a great idea.

That's amazing.  I wouldn't have thought it possible to do it with a golf ball because of how efficiently they bounce off stuff.

You have to stand really close.
We were just mucking about with stuff, I'll have a look at the pictures, can't remember if I took pictures of that or not.

But the jump from 1/2 inch to the 3/4 is a lot more than you expect.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the 3/4 inch uses thinner sheets of wood and the extra lamination is what makes all the difference.
But I never looked or checked, so that could be  nonsense.

So I'm guessing the next video is an impact check on an 'arm' Smiley
Gobble gobble ?

I took my time getting round to watching but, like everyone is saying, great video! It's really quite terrifying how much power can be transferred. Those eggs never stood a chance.

Not a gobble precisely.  But yep, the general idea is correct.  I'm really curious how this one will turn out.  If all goes to plan, it should be done in a couple weeks.
