Wrist/arm weight for more power and distance?
Jun 14th, 2021 at 9:18pm

Had a thought this morning - Has anyone experimented with using one of those weighted wrist/arm band things for jogging to increase the power/distance of their throws?

Seems like if it works for a punch, it would work for a sling?

Couldn't find much online so decided to whip one up with some veg tan leather. If it sucks at least I've got a wrist belt for my steel glandes now!

With the glandes in it.

Side on.

Each rod weighs about 80 grams. The glandes are 65 grams.

16mm steel rod cut to 50mm lengths, and pointed by putting in a drill press and hitting each end of it with the angle grinder. Very consistent.

Actually I hadn't considered it for training. My thought was that like if you punch with a weighted glove, the force is far greater, similarly, if my slinging arm was heavier when I sling a rock, would the force of the impact be greater while wearing the weight?

That's not too shabby at all for something just whipped up.

I think it will be effective for training, if you want more resistance while throwing you can simply use heavier ammunition.

Thank you 🙂 I do a bit of leathercraft.

I think I didn't make my question very clear, sorry everyone, my bad 🤐

I think it's more a physics question. I'm not looking for more resistance while slinging, I'm more interested in whether there is any more power, velocity or range added to my usual ammo (about 40-50 grams) while there is an increased weight on my wrist, compared to slinging without the weight.

Like if you increased the weight on a trebuchet the range, power and velocity increases. Or if you had a really light weight golf club compared to a heavy one, there would be a difference on the range of the golf ball. Or if you got punched with a regular fist, compared to a fist with a weighted glove on, you would feel a difference in the impact.

Does that make sense kinda?

I'd go out and test it but the weather is dreadful at the moment. Will report back when I do get out there again though 😁

if you put it on the throwing arm you'll lower your efficiency. Same as adding weight to bow tips.
if you put it on the non throwing arm it will probably help utilizing the rest of the body better.
nice construction

Ah ok! Thanks for that! Maybe I'll keep it on my other arm. Those rods make a very nice projectile anyway 🙂

Will run some tests anyway, thanks again 😁

In the case of the glove and golf club you are getting a heavier object up to speed which will hit harder. The slinging equivalent of this is simply using heavier ammo.

The trebuchet example just increases the force of the machine, it is equivalent to having bigger muscles for slinging.

Increasing weight in your hand is more like putting weight on the wrong side of the trebuchet arm and making it harder for the actual main weight to move the trebuchet arm and launch the projectile.

Ahh ok, yeah that does make more sense when you explain it like that.

Thanks for the response! I'll shelve that idea back in the half-baked pile 😂

Agree with Sarosh. It will decrease power. But the design is excellent for a non-throwing hand side. Very nice looking!
