Has anyone used inner tree bark to make a sling?
Jun 11th, 2021 at 7:03pm

Just wondering if anyone has tried to make a sling using inner tree bark, I have made one using walnut bark, with a leather pouch.

I think I might have once at one point from willow? Maybe? But I love that. It looks great. Did you boil the fiber in ash water first?

Hows it holding up?

I didn’t boil it in ash water. It hold up really well but the bark doesn’t have much friction in the whipping so after about a dozen throws the loop side sting slips out and I have to fix it.

Greetings Jack, what you are talking about is "bast". There is archeobotanical evidence that lime bast was the primary cordage used in neolithic times and later. Good luck.

Iffen yu was asken I about a solid pouch ... bast is by its nature only useful as a stranded material. There is a rather cute reconstruction sketch of a bloke wandering round doing an imitation of a haystack with legs    !!!

And I've made a sling with lime bast. I was taking the bark off an unknown log and realised it would make for great cordage. I then found out it was lime bast and made a sling and rope from it. Great stuff. Easy to see why it was used.
