Cake-pop concrete balls
Jun 10th, 2021 at 7:27am

Been doing some experimenting with concrete balls in hopes of improving consistency. Found that cake-pop baking trays make lovely uniform orbs. They're still curing, but they should work as well as your concrete mix, trying out a few recipes for strength and durability. Also, a couple of steel egg cups from the opshop make nice eggs, albeit a bit large for my liking.

Hand rolling little ones is easy enough too, as long as it's the right consistency.

All pictured.

They look delicious Wink

I've been meaning to experiment with mortar mix, but haven't had the time lately.  What's the surface texture like on those when they're done?

Yeah it's fairly smooth, somewhere between a river stone and a pumice stone haha

I've done a mix with sand and concrete which made the nice smooth ones pictured. Another batch with aggregate are a bit rougher but should hold up better to my metal target, but I've slung worse rocks 😝

You have to kindof jiggle it in thr mold a bit to make the bigger aggregate bits move and the sloppy concrete to touch the sides. Fill both sides, quickly sandwich it together and fill the air gap with more concrete until it's full. A bit of stuffing around. I'm sure with time I'll get quicker, and weather sucks at the moment anyway.

Awesome! I still haven't tried concrete or even clay ammo.

Nice!  Morphy used to make concrete ammo all the time too.  I have questions…

What does it work out to in terms of cost per piece?

Are you optimizing the water ratio for max tensile strength?

Have you considered fibrous material add-ins for improving toughness?

Sorry Ratman, I'll try figure out sizing for next time 🙂

I just used two metal egg holders from the opshop to get the egg shape, twisted them together to get a smooth surface.

Something like this ought to work. I just lucked out at the thrift  store. Even the ceramic kind works though, just pick two identical ones.

I find MS Paint easy to use for resizing plus it's simple program that doesn't take up a lot of space on your computer.  Nice looking projectiles, BTW.
