Nature Sling Design 2021!
Apr 10th, 2021 at 6:26am

Ok all, this one is sure to appeal to people (hopefully!) but for opposite reasons of previous design contests!

Instead of looking into the future, lets take a look in the past. In this thread the only rule is that whatever sling you make can only be made with a one edged tool and any other "natural" tool you can make with that tool from nature. This means harvesting your own source of fiber, making a drop spindle if thats a direction you want to go or braiding loose fiber into cordage etc.

As for tools you can use your edged tool to, for example, make a wood club to pound the fibers out of a plant but you cannot use a knife to cut an existing modern made tool or material and count that. Everything but the tool involved in making the sling MUST come from nature!

Slings can be normal slings, staff slings, kestros or any other design you feel like making so long as its au naturel.  Cool

Best sling wins!

Ok so can you use a knife to harvest bark? Or can I only use the knife to build tools?

You can use your knife, hatchet or whatever edged tool you choose to do anything from nature. So any harvesting, making as elaborate a sling making tool or tools as you want so long as all materials except the edged tool come from nature itself. If you want to make an entire loom you can so long as it all comes from nature.

For some people, this is just a normal sling-making session  Grin

Yes lol. Which is good because some are more of a traditionalist and some want to create new things. This one appeals to our bush crafters and survivalists more.

So this is cheating because I made these last year, but I have two nettle fibre slings Cheesy Only tools used were a mushroom knife to harvest the nettles then a short log to crush the stems. One is twisted, the other braided. I actually gave both away but they were pretty functional. I can make a different new one.

I already know I can make a corn husk sling... that’s almost too easy too. You don’t really even need a knife to get the husk apart.

Kick do you want that to be your official entry or should I wait? Or do I need to give you a few more days to become hopelessly addicted to this idea before asking?

Do beer cans count?  No matter how remote an area is, there’s always some lying on the ground somewhere nearby.

No trash. Sorry. And if anyone attempts to make a sling from a Coors light can or other such flavored water they immediately are out of the running. Sorry man I didnt make the rules. This is just how it is.

This came straight from the Reptoid Overlords themselves. No trash, no modern tools except one metal edged tool of your choice. Apparently even aliens cant stand Coors light.

Well the nettles won't be good until the end of Summer but these are old slings that I don't even own anymore so I don't feel I can in good conscience have them in the competition. Actually I do have some old nettle fibre so maybe if I get time I'll put together a new one.

@Kick - sounds good man. I know you are still dealing with snow. Hopefully the other nettle fiber or maybe even something like willow inner bark would work. Man...who wouldve guessed Finland would have so much snow? Am I right? nevermind.

@Duck- Ya, doesn’t have to be crazy but if you do end up having the time any entry would be interesting to see. Even I want to take part in this one. Just need to find a local source of fiber.
