Documented sling bullet hits
Mar 18th, 2021 at 2:49pm

I would be interested in the stories y'all have about documented hits of humans or animals, either by personal ecperience, an observer, hearsay or written sources, in order  to gain understanding of potential impact.

Here is my story being hit.
I was hit once by a 100g stone by a befriended slinger standing about 15m apart. A stone escaped shis pouch right during the throw. It hit me at the lower leg, was perhaps a bit deflected, continued its flight for at least 50 more meters, and slided on the asphalt 50more meters. So at least a fair share of energy was still in the potential energy of the flight. It hit me in the middle of the lower leg about 5cm sideways next to the bone, not directly the bone. At first it did not hurt. Within a few minutes a 10x10 cm round patch swell about 3-4 cm high. It took about two weeks untill it was not swollen any more. So the tissues showed a severe reaction. The bone itself did not seem to be fractured, but I dd not have it x-ray analyzed. I was astonished by the severe tissue effect. Such an effect would not be easily simulated with ballistic gelatine...

I slapped my ass with a half pound stone of a botched throw once.

One time I slang a baseball at a wall and it rolled and bounced on the ground until it hit my leg like 50 feet away. The spot hurt for around two weeks when I touched it.

Haven't managed to hit myself yet...

Did almost strangle myself though when I botched a throw and the pouch came right around and coiled itself nicely around my throat. Grin

I haven’t got much experience with being hit myself but I have broken many old animal skulls and bones I’ve found while roving.
No doubt the sling has power . But the ammo makes the punch.

I have yet to get hit by a stone but I've been hit by a water balloon  going maybe 80 mph and that definitely woke me up.

When I was first learning, I was pretty stupid. I had a sling that was pretty much the worst design anyone could ever think of, and I was practicing under a bridge (ceiling only 5 or 6 ft. over my head) with a roughly 1 pound stone. Then I tried "overhand"...

Luckily the bridge was designed in such a way that the stone bounced off the ceiling and a support before being dropped down mostly by gravity. It hit me at the base of the neck where it connects to the back, and it was quite painful. However, it wasn't debilitating in any way since it was a short drop and it hit somewhere a bit sturdier.

The real damage was the realization that just a few more inches in a different direction could have concussed me or even kill me. I called it quits for that day, and I started reevaluating some slinging decisions...

Even from a short height, not at terminal velocity, a stone isn't to be messed with...

Here is a view that Goliath probably had, except the stone wasn't bright yello. BTW *the camera fully survived*...

It just doesn't work anymore unless I can realign the optics. Sensor and everything else are fine.

Surprising to me was that this camera was actually pretty well protected by a 3/4" thick piece of plywood with a hole drilled in it that the camera was looking through. But the darn rusty ball deformed enough to poke through the hole and knocked the camera lens. I still don't get how it deformed enough.  Next time I'll put some plexiglass over the hole, I didn't think I'd needed to, but clearly that was a mistake.

When I was slinging on a beach in the North-East of England, an elderly man who was going for a walk took interest in what I was doing. He proceeded to tell me a story about how he used a sling when he was a boy, and once slung a stone over a wall (by accident), which then went through a window and hit an old woman on the head. I don't know what happened to the lady, but he told me that his bum still hurt to that day.

And this is why "any" tests done on lethality inevitably under sell the damage potential. Ive seen plenty of people just as dead as you could imagine looking spotless. Hematomas and brain bleeds and all sorts of other wonderful.things simply cant be registered with a block of gelatin. Neither can torn or ruptured arteries and organs. You can get something like a whole pig carcasse and that still wouldnt tell you much.

Took a 15 yr old kid to the hospital the other night that had been all beaten to hell. By the time we got there his head looked like a rotten melon about to pop, but very few bruises at least at that moment and before the swelling had set in he wouldve looked mostly normal even though he was majorly #$%@ed up.

You just cant get an understanding, especially with concussive forces of whats going on with gelatin and fake bones. Great for studying bullet wound channels but not so much for slings.

I know it would be extremely controversial posting the link, so I won’t, but there’s actually a video that shows a person being hit in the head with a sling stone. It’s on YouTube from Chiaraje 2016.

A man who is slinging is blindsided by a stone to the side of the head, instantly incapacitating him. He’s still alive and tries to get up, but falls over. I know it’s a cultural event, but it’s quite sickening to watch because of the way he’s treated as he’s down. One of his garments is taken and people whip him with slings or flails while he stumbles around. It takes a few minutes to drag him off of the battlefield. I hope he survived.

Like I said, I know it’s a cultural event, but there are so many disrespects happening there. More relevant for this site, I don’t think the sling is respected. A lot of the slingers from Chiaraje look like amateurs, and I’d guess they have relatively few injuries and deaths because of that.

Anyways enough ranting about that. Imagine an actual battle. A sling stone is a slow, disorienting, and probably frightening way to go. I guess any way to die in battle is terrifying, sling stones just have a different brand of bad.
