I had a post about this a little while back.

I was thinking it might be possible to tie a temporary knot to act as an anchor point in order to make a longer braid. Start the braid and make it long as possible, then tie a temporary knot in the braided area to act as the new anchor point. I think my explanation in the linked topic is better. It's difficult to explain in words what I'm thinking about. I haven't gotten around to testing this yet.
