Conspiracies
Jan 13th, 2021 at 12:57am

While some conspiracies are real, the term “conspiracy theory” usually refers to some overly complicated, outlandish, and factually false set of alternative beliefs about some story or event. For better or worse, there seems to be some common themes among the conspiracy theories that are usually considered “crazy”.
For me, some topics immediately make me suspicious of the veracity of a story. I am curious what everyone else thinks... which of these topics/elements is most likely to indicate a fake conspiracy? Which of these elements would enhance your belief that the story is true and that there’s a real conspiracy?  Which ones don’t sway your beliefs either way? (Maybe just pick a few... or add to the list!)

Ok... it’s a long list. Here are some of the ones that make me  very skeptical when they are mentioned:

DARPA- they give out money to researchers. They don’t actually develop tech at DARPA, so if a conspiracy mentions DARPA, there’s a good chance it was made up by someone who doesn’t know what they actually do.

Spec Ops -most people who use this term don’t know the difference between Special Forces operators and Special Operations. There’s a difference, and wanton use of spec ops is a clue the story was made up.

Shadow Government- too generic and scary sounding. It also indicates that someone doesn’t understand how the government works, because a handful of people couldn’t actually run the government in secret.

Aliens-just no.

Metal powder and Mind control - right up there with aliens

Cold fusion - has been a hoax for decades, yet it still keeps popping up.

Red Mercury/suitcase nukes - this one hasn’t been that popular in the last few years, but it’s more likely that a full-sized nuke could be snuck into a major metropolis on a semi-truck, so the scary bomb-in-a-suitcase thing just sounds too sensational and impractical.

Illuminati/Trilateral Commission/ Freemasons/Seven Jews... usually these are mentioned as an appeal to authority among conspiracy nuts to suggest that the plot they are explaining is real.  Obviously the appeal to authority requires that you first believe in a secret globalist cabal who actually runs the world from behind the scenes.

Most of the other things on the list will not immediately disqualify a story without more context.

Aliens are real. Saying that humans are the most intelligent life inthe whole universe.  Time has shown that humans are dumb. There are definitely smarter life beings out there.

A person or two can be quite intelligent, but people are dumb. Somehow it seems that things get stupider as a crowd gets bigger.

Oh... another one: dirty bombs.

I subscribe to UC Berkeley Professor Richard Muller’s philosophy on dirty bombs. He says that if you gather enough nuclear materials to build one, it’ll probably kill the bomb builder, but even if it is successfully exploded, it will only lead to a slightly elevated risk of cancer in 30 years for the people nearby. Compared to immediate mass death and destruction, that’s a pretty ineffective terror weapon.

This thread is one of those ones that I won't even start with. The pros and cons for some of these conspiracies are pretty damn detailed and it would not do the subject justice to try and discuss this in such a limited way.

I did see you missed one perfectly verifiable one. Reptilians. Which are not always considered aliens. There's some amazing evidence out there if you know where to find it. For example, here's a 40 second  video buried by the YouTube algorithm for reasons one can only guess. But it's pretty darn convincing evidence George W. Bush is a Reptillian. Turn your sound up.

That’s the whole idea... sometimes the details are important and the story may or may not sound convincing, but some topics seem to only come up when someone is trying to be creative and get attention with a fictional story.
DARPA is a great example.  People get tired of using the CIA, even though they are explicitly in the conspiracy business, so the person making up the conspiracy will name drop other government agencies like DARPA without understanding the actual role of those agencies within the government.

I’m curious from a broad-strokes perspective whether any particular subject makes you pay closer attention or roll your eyes and stop listening.

Ha!  He hit a lot of the high notes for sure!

A few years ago, I saw an actual scientific publication where someone analyzed the radio propagation characteristics of 3 different foil hats. Hilariously, they actually caused a signal concentration on the wearer’s head instead of attenuating the signals. Obviously tin foil as a safeguard is yet another conspiracy!

The worst part is that stupid people breed much faster than smart ones.
