Common Privet Bow 40# at 25''
Jan 12th, 2021 at 1:34pm

I made a new bow today. I wanted something longer. I made this 64'' bow as well from Common Privet. It is the best bow I have made so far. Cut the stave with a SAK, did the rough work with a hatchet and all the tillering with a flint scraper.

I have not shot enough different type of bows to know what values as bad handshock, but this is the best shooting bow I have made so far with the least vibration. The part of the limbs close to the handle have a little natural bend outwards when its unstrung. I like that a lot because there seems to be much less string follow as a result

I think if you're a beginner bowyer like me and you want a well tillered 40 pound bow then make it a lot heavier at first, I was actually aiming for a much higher poundage but shed a lot in the tillering process. Previously I aimed for a 40 pound bow and ended up with 25 pound bows, now I aim for a 60 pound bow and end up with a 40 pounder, eventually my target weights should become more aligned with experience
