Weaving a Sling Pouch is hard. (But it was fun)
Dec 21st, 2020 at 7:39am

Come one, come all!

To see my very first woven sling pouch!

After yet another leather pouch snapped at a bad time.

I decided that "maybe the grass is greener in woven sling pouches."

My weaving is awful.

But it works.

With small bits of fruit, so far.

Hooray!

I still haven't made a successful woven pouch I would say at least this style. The Egyptian twining over sticks method has worked out pretty well but a straight weave has always turned out weird for me. Good job!

I was also struggling for a while, but I found success when I made a little jig with a scrap bit of wood and some screws, and those little office alligator clips? to hold the strings in place...

might be worth a go, it sure helped me.

Nice work on the weaving

It's surprising that your leather pouches are breaking- Correct me if I am wrong but I expect they are tearing at the cord attachment bit?

There are some good templates in: https://slinging.org/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1344443925
which double or triple up the leather at the attachment point and form a slight cup, I've not had these break even with quite thin leather. An alternative is to use eyelets which will reinforce the holes a lot.

Weaving works well too, but takes much much longer and more technical ability, it's also usually heavier unless working with very fine cord.

Essentially there are 4 main issues, most of which I've almost fixed or fixed:

1. My slings were being made too long for my style of throwing and the pouches were hitting the ground or rocks a lot
2. The leather I'm using is scrap leather, some of it is very brittle
3. My early designs right up to my last two were using single layer leather with holes I'd punched through with a hammer and sharp object, I have started to use folding leather techniques and that seems to be working much better.
4. the way I've been cutting leather has not been very precise and I suspect there have been small tears that have opened up more and more over daily use.

Try using eyelets. It makes a huge difference. My typical sling uses 2-3 layers of upholstery grade (aka “from an old couch”) chrome tanned leather with an aluminum eyelet. I’ve never had a cord rip out.

Also... get a decent pair of medical shears. They are great for cutting leather and don’t cost a lot of money. You can also buy a leather hole punch (the kind you hit with a hammer) on Ebay or Etsy for a few dollars.

Do you know any videos that teach you how to insert the eyelets? Could you link me one?  Grin

For paracord, a hot knife is a life saver... or at least a fingertip saver. I got tired of burnt fingers and lumpy over-melted paracord ends, so I built one about a year ago. Mine got a little fancy with built in measuring sticks and foot pedals, but all you really need is some nichrome wire (like from a vape shop) and a DC power supply. They’re not too difficult to build yourself.

I will try to post a video for you at some point. I had a lot of trouble getting good even eyelets with the hammer dies and hand press tools, so I bought a desktop press, and now they are fast and easy. The hammer-type dies are probably the best option on a budget.
