Canvas would require a completely different design, but you’re an engineer, so I am sure you can come up with something that works well with the materials you have. With leather I use relatively thin overlapping fingers, and it would unravel the weave if you just copied the same shape in canvas.  If you double up the fabric, it gets too thick to install the eyelet, because it would have to pass through 6 layers of canvas.

Generally speaking though, I’ve found 3.5”x7” is a good pouch size for a tennis ball, and I make the pocket deep on the retention side and flat on the release side.

6 layers should be ok for eyelets, my canvas is for painting, it's not the heavy type.
