My First (functioning) Good Quality Sling
Nov 23rd, 2020 at 2:23am

Hello all, once again! Seeing some of the
wonderful slings
on here I was driven to try and make something better than
my usual
simple slings, (and also my simple slings have been breaking every 100 throws or so as well).

I made a few trial weaves before this one but most of the braiding was too loose or inconsistent and was making my release awful.

Finally, I got a tight, consistent braid at what I suspect is the perfect length for me as well.

Any advice or thoughts will be appreciated.

Looks good! It's good that you got the knots facing away from the inside of the pouch. That can be a big problem with attaching the cords on a pouch as it can foul the shots, but it looks like a pretty smooth line. Nice!

The braid looks good!  Although with paracord, one strand will usually be strong enough for any normal sized sling projectile.  That said, cord thickness will almost always come down to personal preference.

You mentioned that your simple slings are breaking.  I'm curious where they are breaking.  It it where the cords are attached to the pouch?

To Kick:
Yeah I had been making slings with knots that poked through the leather and were held in by friction at first but as I got better the (G-forces I guess?) started straining the leather and the knots would pop out, so I used a similar set up to that which you'd use to attach rubber flat-bands to a slingshot pouch, and you are absolutely right, the release is much smoother as a result.

To Kilisi:
Thanks very much man! it's taken a while but I'm starting to get better at making the look nice and work well!

To Mersa:
I've tried two strips of leather, and narrow short pouches, and narrow long pouches, but the classic slingshot style just seems so versatile and consistent! also thanks!

To Morphy:
Oh no way my dude, this is like my 20th attempt at sling making ahahah I probably worded my title badly! Thanks man!

To Joe Meadmaker:
I have been running single strand paracord slings for almost the whole time I've been learning, they were fine for ages but as I've gotten better I think I'm slinging much harder now and because I use a primarily underhand swing and make a big effort to get my shots as low to the ground (usually about 20cm and straight as possible the knot end of my sling is probably taking big damage as it whips the ground about 100 times a day, I know this as my current braided sling takes chunks out of the sand and grass when I sling.

Also, the heavy cords feels more powerful so there's also that.

Thanks to everyone again!

^ Yep. I found a few of my first ones. So poorly built, poorly designed and poorly executed. Fun to find them though, they were made over 20 years ago.

Your slings and your slinging has progressed a great deal since then I'm sure. I don't have any of my first but they were honestly so bad if I posted them you would think I was making some kind of sick joke.

In the post on the top right, there is a button that says "Quote". Hit that. It will put the whole post in your own. If you want to use a smaller section, highlight the portion and hit "Mark and Quote".
