[Sling Mechanics]Remember my Idea for a Fantasy Game?

So yes this will be about the slinging mechanics for that game. I’m wondering what would be the best way to do it.

So I’m moving from an almost complete Souls clone to something a little more like a “shooter” but with the Soulslike melee with equal emphasis on reactionary evasion still intact. So I’ll give a rundown on the buttonmapping I’m thinking about as many of ya might know those middle three buttons can’t be used as they are for menu selections..I’ll post a photo of my controller with some hastily drawn tags (pardon that by the way)...

So the markings are:
Move/Sprint

Equipment (switching between weapons in each hand like in souls, as well as consumables and spells)

Look/Parry

Jump

Roll/Evade

Switch Stance

Pickup (general “interact” button, might make it the “consumable” button if a player only taps instead of holding it)

Focus Mode (“Aim down sights” in the context of a medieval fantasy game, this button will become the primary attack for a duel wielded weapon)

Block (Secondary attack for duel wielding)

Primary Attack

Secondary Attack

Okay, now that buttonmapping is out of the way, what kinda mechanics might be cool for a sling?

Hmm... How about this:

The player holds a button to "wind up" and the sling starts spinning. The right stick aims, while the left stick is used to change the axis/direction of the spin (Over/underhand, helicopter, etc.).

Instead of aiming with a reticle, however, the player would gauge their stone's trajectory with a highlight or subtle glow around the target they happen to be aiming at (Kind of like the archery system in "Minecraft: Dungeons.") This would make aiming more fluid and... Well, sling-like.

Releasing the button would let the stone fly. (And maybe there could be an in-game system for making it easier to acquire better targets, as the character's 'slinging skill' levels up!)

The way some golf games work could work with slings. Choosing how hard you are throwing, the arc you are going for and a rough area that the ammo is going to go.

Or just use a Nintendo Wii controller and make the player actually make a slinging motion. What could possibly go wrong? Grin

“My final hour is at hand. We face an enemy more numerous and cunning than the world has yet seen. Remember your training, and do not fear the hordes of Judas. I, without sin, shall cast the first stone. That will be your sign to attack! But you shall not fight this unholy enemy with stones. No! RAZOR GLANDES!  Aim for the eyes! May the Lord have mercy, for we shall show none!“  -Jesus the Noodler
