In fact, I think now the Balearic sling is modelled after an all-leather sling, because the Balearic sling is the only natural fibre sling I know thus far that has the same sideways rigidity as an all-leather sling.
It is braided and build in such a way that the whole thing feels ''leathery''. I can imagine they were using leather far into the past, but it was in short supply, so they designed a natural fibre sling modeled after their leather ones, and since it worked just as good it replaced the leather ones.
I have a hard time believing that the current Balearic sling they pulled from thin air, it is so specific, so modelled after ''something'', this something fits an all-leather sling perfectly.
The first slings would be straps of leather/cloth/tree bark then someone would thin them down for less drag and then someone thought probably that a solid/wide pouch isnt always a necessity,it consumes too much material and time(I have egyptian style slings in mind) , and can be easily be replaced by a braided split pouch which is very simple to make . the sling designs are affected by climate and the culture much like bow design is. there are reasons why the english used longbows and not asiatic style bows with siyahs and vice versa. if you see the necessities of every situation closely you will understand that there is no superior way, every tool fulfills its purpose.
I believe there is constant refinement and adaptation not that many leaps in design development.
