The Hjortspring find.

I am looking for information about the sling as a weapon in the pre roman iron age in North Europa and the Baltic comtries.
The reason is that in that in the find in 1920 in Hjortspring in the island Als in Denmark was found boat sacrifice from about 350 BC. There was found a boat, for 20 men, and with a displacement of 4 ton. There were found all sort of weapon for an army of about 100 man. The were found swords, spears, mail-coats, shields and many other items. Among “other tings” there were found a great many 5-10 cm large flint-stones often lightly chipped. According to Klaus Randsborg 1995 they were most likely missiles. (I assume the he means missiles for slings).
Have anyone information about slings from the pre roman iron age?  Smiley

A photo to illustrate the boat of Hjortspring.
Your question is good because what is the weight of a peeble of flint ?
Is it possible to sling inboard (with a personnal sling or other weapon) or not ?

there is very little information on the actual slings as they tend to be made from natural materials and just don't show up in archaeological digs.
Sling stones - on the other hand - are exceptionally common and frequently found in extremely large cahes at iron age hill forts.
At danebury they found over 10,000 !

I do not know the weight. The size is about 5 to 10 cm.

Hello ALP,
With internet, you can find many pictures of the Hjordspring boat. Very interesting.
The photo I joined is the replica of the Iron Age boat in the boat museum at Bergen.
I must search two pebbles of flint : 5 and 10 cm to have an idea of the weight. A few days later.

Here's the weight of two pebbles of flint, just to illustrate the question.
5 cm, it is a good weight for sling, but 10 cm, or 550 grammes,  Undecided
After, sling, staff sling or "handed" missiles is the question. It's necessary more détails about the stones. Today, we can say that probably the warriors of the Iron Age used stones like missiles.

Thank you for this link. If I go to Denmark for holidays, I'll go to see this museum, it's sure.
And it's the third time I hear for pebbles of flint for probably slingstones. The most important, I think, is that only flint for these three cases. It is not possible to say more but it may be interesting for the reason of the choice of these stones or these another stones . Often, different stones are present.
For example, on the beach of my village :
