Quarantine Boredom Busters
Mar 27th, 2020 at 8:47am

So much is shutting down the whole world round, what are you doing to beat the doldrums? I've  got two kids to teach each day so not much time to fill but others have more.  A lot of folks putting up a lot of stuff. It's easy to fall into habits doing things you actually hate so let's combat that in this thread.

The Metropolitan Opera is putting some stuff up for free. The wife and I watched part of the ring cycle last night. US military bands are doing virtual concerts.

Exercise daily is a good plan. Doyogawithme and fitnessblender are good resources most of which are free and you should find something that works at your level.

As I mentioned on another thread, my right foot sustained a mystery injury, probably while walking Pandora in the off leash park about ten days ago.  The timing is terrible because now I can't even walk the dogs to escape the doldrums.
It's slowly getting better I think.  I'm not about to go sit in a doctor's waiting room for an hour with hacking, coughing patients. I'll deal with it by myself for now.
I don't drink or do drugs so those escapes aren't available to me. And I gave up on playing music a while ago. I might pick it up again if the inspiration ever hits me.
PornHub is a cheap, safe way to stay out of trouble. Other than that and trolling tRump on Facebook and TV are my only distractions.

Can't help but think there are some worthwhile additional ways to use your time there RM   Grin

I mean so far I've gotten a jump on spring cleaning (so many windows cleaned), experimented with some new recipes. And I'm working my way through ( https://www.amazon.com/Decorative-Fusion-Knots-Step-Step/dp/1931160783 ) I'm gonna tie them all before it goes back to the library.

I've been intrigued by braiding a snake whip but haven't bit on that yet. Got enough half finished projects lying around and my kids would surely lose my progress halfway through.

https://stories.audible.com/start-listen has a bunch of free (for now) audiobooks. It's aimed at kids but also has some classics like Jack London and Shakespeare and more. I'm a big fan of audiobooks while doing mindless cleaning (or braiding). Just finished "Call sign chaos" from my local library. Solid read.

Unfortunately my air pistol gave up the ghost and its tear down and refurb isn't a priority. A great opportunity to work on some marksmanship indoors otherwise. A beeman p17 and a tin of 500 pellets will set you back less than 50 and is a fun time.

I'm currently starting to learn Spanish via mostly app for now, but probably online tuition when I get some base knowledge down. Pretty useful for the Balaerics next year  Cheesy

Which App? I’ve been slowly learning español on duolingo... started before the quarantine and now barely have time to keep up

I'll be doing some hiking this week in a remote area of Allegheny state park. Social distancing at it's best. I can bring the slings along also.

I was doing Swedish on Duolingo and got to something like 98 day streak... then didn't realise how late it was and lost it. All motivation evaporated. I still feel bad and maybe I'll get back to it but...

I'm on Duolingo too. Just finished the second checkpoint bit today.

It's true with the streaks, I actually deliberately took a day off and lost the streak so that I don't have a massive dump in motivation levels when it drops.

Another fun one is Anki- a flashcard app. It's great for learning/memorising all sorts of things. Currently I have nearly perfect knowledge of all counties in the UK by map location and my periodic table is 90% there by number, symbol and name.

I started a massive general geography one, but it became a bit overwhelming in level of content so I might come back to that now the others are becoming more solid.

I recently organized an online card playing evening with friends to socialize a bit.

Other than that I also started the spring cleaning.

Spring house cleaning is a good boredom buster.  Mike and I attacked the junk room on Sunday.  It hadn't been organized in two and a half years.  We threw away a mountain of stuff.  Next in line is my bedroom.  One benefit of this is that you always discover many long, lost treasures like all of the lids to my ancient Corningwear set. The shed and Mikes room also need to be done.

I completely disassembled, cleaned, lubed my airgun and replaced an o-ring. Something very satisfying in tearing a simple machine down and learning how it functions.
