Are good movies becoming more rare?
Oct 1st, 2019 at 8:35pm

Two questions actually. The first is as above.

Looking back on the movies from the 70s, 80s and 90s I don't feel like we are getting the same quality anymore.

The other question I have is, does anyone else feel like politics should be left out of movies?  I find the more heavy handed the director is on adding current day politics the more it brings me out of the movie and potentially ruins it all together.

Without being too controversial, for me, The Last Jedi was a steaming pile of hot garbage. I could rant on that movie for hours. But I will spare you. It comes down to too much politics and political agenda.

What do you think? Maybe this is just me. Tell us your thoughts and help me avoid studying.

The only thing I will say about The Last Jedi is that it was just as amazingly good as The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. If I only had one golden plunger award to give out, I’d probably cut it in half... but George Lucas would still get both halves! He should've gotten out of the movie business decades ago.

To answer your question though Morphy... most movies are bad and always have been. It’s just less painful to only remember the few good ones Smiley

One problem is that the big studios are too scared to do something new. They want easy bankability which is why it seems everything is a remake or a superhero movie. They make cash and pretty reliably even if the movie itself sucks. Case in point, DC. Most of their current offerings have been terrible... and made a crap ton of cash. Of course, not as much as Marvel are making so DC are unhappy because nowadays if a company is making loads of money but not ALL the money they think they're failing. There are still really good movies being made but it seems they are coming from smaller studios that aren't getting as much media.

What I hate are when they take an old TV show from the 60's or 70's and remake it into a movie. Same with the video game inspired movies. It just seems like laziness.

we become numb to good movies too many of them are made and they are easily available.
I believe the percentage of good movies has remained the same but the quantity has risen.

I do have a sure fire formula for making a great movie:
Step 1. Find a popular video game and write a script around it’s plot
Step 2. Hire one big Hollywood star. Only one.
Step 3. Most of your budget should be spent on CGI
Step 4. Ride the sequel train into retirement!

Here are some suggestions for new movies using this foolproof formula:
Portal
Five Nights at Freddy’s
Tetris
Starfox
Candy Crush
The Sudoku Trilogy

Shall I go on? Ok...
PUBG the Movie
Goldeneye the Video Game: The Movie
Doodle Jump
Flappy Bird
Fallout
Pacman: Revenge of the Fallen
Ms. Pacman: The Mystery of the Bow

... you’re right Morphy. There’s no excuse for bad movies. Maybe I should quit my job and move to Hollywood to fix things for you. All I have to do is become a waiter and wait until the big shot producers roll through the restaurant so I can pitch these epic movie ideas to them.

Well Transformers is the most glaring example isn't it? It used to be, make a movie if it was really popular, make a sequel. That was a big deal.

Then the triology became popular. It doesn't feel complete without a triology. Now they don't even bother hiding what they are doing. If it makes money just keep riding that horse into the ground. Which Transformers are we on? Part 12? Please just let the toy robots die. For all that is good and holy, let them all die.

That being said good movies are still being made. I believe personally the Lord of the Rings triology was the greatest three movies I've ever seen. Everything was top notch. It's just in the last ten years everything is comics and reboots. And reboots of comic reboots, (Spiderman I'm looking at you.)

I'm not much of a procrastinator, I would like to be but I can never bring myself to actually do it. That's why I post random topics on Slinging.org.
