Linen cordage from online source?
Sep 7th, 2019 at 11:29am

I want to make a "deluxe" sling .
until now I used lower quality linen cordage with no consistent strength or diameter, from time to time when buying new skein I had to slightly change the design to compensate for too thick or too thin cords .

I'm looking for the best of the best of linen cords/threads.
I want to try 7-ply cords with overall thickness from 1mm to 4mm does anyone know of any online sellers? interested in europe sellers or free international shipping

by the way has anyone used such cordage on a sling?

This is the highest quality Irish linen I've personally used. The 12/3 will get you around a 5 mm cord with 16 strands. Of course you could use less to get your size. I plan on using the 35/3 for some very intricate 36 strand braids. You will also need to dye them yourself. Very high quality and the cost reflects that.

I have not used linen yet.

So far I have used for cords- regular hemp, polished hemp, jute, sisal, manilla, real Balearic sisal (forgot its name), wool, leather, cheap polyester cords, paracord. Of all these hands down paracord slings the best for me. I would still like to try sinew, flax, linen and cotton, but I don't think paracord can be beaten. Of course paracord slings don't feel deluxe because its cheap and quick, but considering the complexity and perfection of their braid, they are probably the most 'deluxe'. So deluxe that only a machine can make it. Although I admit there's not much romance to paracord.

nice . so you've used it? it says it's lightly waxed, is it sticky?
I think i would like 18/7 or 12/7 unwaxed but apparently no one makes it.  Sad

maybe it's time to make a spinning wheel and start making some from fibers Tongue

to tell you truth I've never touched paracord in my life at least not that I remember .
I think paracord will be stretchy and heavy compared to braided linen, since it's nylon core.
I've used nylon, PP cordage and some thin dyneema rope. I like split pouches and for some reason i don't like synthetic split pouches. for leather pouch slings there are better options than braided linen...

So lightly waxed you can't even tell there's any there. So far I've only done trial runs with it. I ended up getting the thickest kind and it was too thick for the slings I have in mind. I'll probably save it for a 16 strand braids for a sith or something. I have dyed it and it works fairly well.

My next big project with flax is to spin it also. I plan on planting a large amount. It's easy to process into fiber and damnit I will buy a spinning wheel even if I must endure endless jokes. All for the love of weapons making.  Grin

Actually I could see myself doing the same thing if I had room to grow flax. The other day I gave my potted lemongrass a haircut and couldn’t help myself. I had to try making it into cordage Smiley

We have had an ashford wheel for over 30 years. I still have not taken the time to learn how to use it.  Undecided I use a drop spindle and a hand drill.

Is the linen you are using bow string quality?

The linen from the above website should be. But the particular size I bought is too thick for a proper bowstring with the right amount of sub plies. Possibly the thinnest might work though.
