From bed to hammock?
Jul 11th, 2019 at 12:44pm

Thinking of getting a hammock as a bed replacement. Not one with wooden bars at the ends that you tend to fall out of but the one that wraps around you like the traditional South American hammocks. Anyone else made this change?

Hammocks are fantastically comfortable... if you aren't sharing with someone else. If you are, it's like those scenes in a lot of older fantasy films were the protagonists get caught in a net and strung up from a tree. Elbows and legs everywhere.

I don't know about hammocks but I gave up on traditional beds a long time ago... sometime in the early 80s.  Beds hurt my back.  Any bed.  I'm good sleeping on one for one or two nights but after that my lower back starts to bother me.  I'm a floor critter.  I sleep on a bed roll made of sleeping bags and blankets on the floor.  I haven't had serious back problems in ages.  To some sleeping on a concrete floor seems very strange.  They can't imagine not having a traditional bed.

Well I don't know how it would go as a bed replacement , I almost religiously use hammocks when I'm out in the wild . They are by far my favourite camping option if it's not too cold , if you sleep on your back or side your fine but sleeping on your belly in a hammock is asking far a sore back .

When sleeping while camping the main goal is to get off of the ground somehow.  If it's during the colder months the ground will suck the heat out of you. If it's hot then the bugs will molest you on the ground.  A hammock is one good way to accomplish this.

I use a hammock tent in above freezing night temps and a light weight A frame in winter.

I've seen hammock tents advertised in Bass Pro Shops catalog.  They seem like a great idea to me.  Everything you need and nothing you don't.  Maybe I'll get one.

The secret to using a hammock in cold weather is to use a blanket or a pad cut to shape under you, then your bag.  The hammock will compress around you and collapse the fill in the bag if you don't.

I got my first hammock, last night the first night in it. Wow, haven't slept this good in a long time.
I will use a hammock from now on. No strain or stifness in the morning, I feel supple and well slept. No more beds & tents for me.

I love hammocks but Ive never slept on one. I might need to try. I plan on building a combination man cave/workshop and I will definitely have a hammock in the corner, along with a large TV.  Grin

When I was a starving grad student my wife and I had to save up to get a bed. We slept on the ground with a pad of blankets. I am glad to no longer sleep on the ground.

Although...we do still like a very firm mattress Grin maybe those few months had a lasting effect.
