the problem with stones is that they shatter into sharp hard pieces. In the uk, unless you can sling in a quarry, there's nowhere safe to use stones.
The clay i use, is not fired, so won't break into sharp edges and will actually dissolve in the rain if left out long enough.
Concrete is similiar, doesn't break into sharp edges.
If you mix shredded newspaper and pva glue into your concrete, and use fine sand you can make it fairly stiff and smooth - almost clay like. The newspaper will also absorb moisture and stop it drying out to fast, as well as making it more durable to impacts. Just make sure you wear gloves - lime is not stuff to mess about with !
