Hello from Appalachia

As my username states, I'm a bushman. I wanted to get into becoming good with a sling since I wanted a hunting tool that I can use where ever I go n' stuff it in my pocket or use it as a belt, ammo is everywhere, and from what I've read, slings are something else power wise. (I've originally thought of just using a slingshot, but the issue for me is the bands breaking, or the lack of power compared to a sling) I'm mainly an archer who shoots ol' recurves or a 100# longbow, or use an atlatl, n' an air rifle on occasion. If I become successful on my walkabouts with getting bushmeat I'll be sure to post about the experiences.

Welcome from Finland! There are a few members that have done some hunting with slings. I have to say, hunting with a sling is certainly no easy task. You can certianly get a lot of power with a sling but accuracy is far harder to master than with a bow or slingshot. If you've already made some slings then do post up some photos Smiley

Welcome!  I guess I missed your intro a few days ago. Definitely let us know how you fare with sling hunting.

Alright so to report back, while I haven't done any hunting yet, I'm trying to diagnose what I need to fix with my form. First off my shoulder hurts and I haven't been slinging much (less than 300 shots over the past week), and I've been experiment with different styles, but mainly what feels right rather than copying.

I'm getting my elevation down now and can generally have the stone fly in front of me, but I still have flyers which I guess is timing, also I'm using whatever I can find around the bush so there is no consistency with ammo (I could buy blocks of clay and fire them). What I've found is that I can not sling vertically, my style that I'm best with right now is either a slow helicopter and release on the first or second rotation, or a slanted helicopter that I try to release downwards, or if I'm making a 45 degree chop with an axe for reference. I tried Greek style and it's got a lot of power when I do it right, but I can't hit anything.

I also tried Balearic style and this would be my style for hurling rocks far, but it always releases into the trees, never towards the ground, which I want since I plan on hunting for squirrels, rabbits, possum n' coons with spotlight, turkey and waterfowl (I read in a book about California Indian survival skills that for geese the Chumash liked heavy stones, but for ducks and mud hens they liked lighter clay bullets that could skip on the water easier can potentially get multiple hits.)

I'm mainly concerned with accuracy and keeping my stones flying towards the ground and not into the sky. (If I remember I'll post pictures of my 25" hemp sling)

I had real trouble with fig 8 after only ever doing helicopter but new I feel I've got the hang of it and I would recommend that for hunting. I'm far more consistent and C_A noted in another thread somewhere, it's easier to adjust the vertical axis than the horizontal as you are still on target with vertical and just adjusting height. I would recommend keeping at that one.
