For all your Ballistics discussion needs.

Enjoy, and remember these important formulas:

Range:
Horizontal Range=(v0)^2 (sine of 2x launch angle) / 2g
Where:
v0 = initial velocity (m/s)
g = acceleration due to gravity (9.80 m/s2)

Ballistic Coefficient:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballistic_coefficient

Initial Velocity from Range and Angle:
https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110413210958AAS1wm1&guccounter=1

Also, Gravity, Friction, and Atmospherics exist. Please no Spherical Cows.

Hey!  Those spherical cows come in handy sometimes  Grin

Don’t forget the internal/intermediate ballistics category where your projectile gets all that spin stabilization and where small variations in release timing have a huge impact on accuracy.

Magnus effect is another big issue for slinging:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnus_effect

With practice, you can use it to throw curveballs. It’s also a driving factor in choosing a slinging style: underhanded throws drop to the ground prematurely with frontspin but Apache with backspin floats a bit longer thanks to Magnus.

Interesting. I didn't think we would be dealng with velocities or distances which would require those calculations, but the more I look at it, Slings are vastly different from the Rifles I work with otherwise.

This could get real interesting real fast.

there are more degrees of freedom and fewer constraints on a sling projectile compared to a rifle bullet.  With a slight wrist adjustment, you can change the orientation of the spin relative to the direction of travel and can have all sorts of stable (or unstable) ballistic states for a glande.
The physics model can get quite complicated... especially if we aren’t allowed to assume any spherical cows Smiley

Magnus is pretty easy to demonstrate at slow speeds too. All you need is a large surface area to mass ratio for your projectile:

Neat.

Also, I'll have it be known that I despise maths in much the same way as Dr. Irving Finkle of the British Museum. His video on playing the Royal Game Of Ur is a pretty good description at 10 minutes and 21:30 there.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZskjLq040I

But regardless, there's some basic calculation to clear out of the way first: Angle of shot, muzzle velocity, bullet mass, and so on to get some theoretical maximum ranges. Then, we move into adding drag and ballistic coefficient (determined by ammo), and so on.

You're far ahead of me on this... So have at it. But, cover the basics first.

Wait... the administrator of the maths forum hates math?!

That's besides the point... Smiley

let's get the discussion based initially around a muzzle velocity rage, determined as the possible and attainable.

I'd say about 50m/s would be a good general rule.

Well....... This is really handy, what with the website being somewhat accessible again:

That's a nice summary.  Thanks!
