@Mersa, why couldn’t it be both?  Battle damage and aerodynamics can both be reduced to a factor of cross-sectional area. Long, pointy, thin things fly better and concentrate force in a smaller area than spheres.

The shape has another advantage:

Symmetrical loading. It's the same both ways, so it doesn't require too much attention when loading the sling.

So, 4 major advantages: Boat-Tail/Spitzer shape, better wounding characteristics, and easier loading alongside a stable point of balance. Why do we even bother with anything else? (aside from the obvious reasons of cost, availability, lead exposure, manufacture concerns... Smiley )

A purely aero/distance glande ideally isn't symmetrical and would have a round nose cone , that would be better than a point . They're also thrown by a sling that's why they arnt long and thin , to much risk of tumbling

I have actually had the long sort of thin gland stabilize itself in flight, they started out wobbling but "went to sleep" as they stabilized.  These were clay and around 2oz (60ish g) and could be seen for a pretty good distance.

The didn't go as far as a good throw but went way further than a poor one.  I was throwing over water, so exact distances are just guesses.

Good throw, just short of 200m, stabilized itself was around 150 and bad was curving at an angle and hit around 100 to 125.

The only distance I know for sure was the further bank was just over 200m and I never got one to the far side.  Several were really close but no cigar.

This is why I really love slinging!  It seems so simple, but there are so many things going on under the surface... physics, aerodynamics, biomechanics... but you don't even need to understand any of those things to have fun or get good results from the sport Smiley

So, if we make some paper targets, we could test that distance, without the need for high-speed cameras. I've shot muzzle-loaders a lot in the past, and we found that a lot of modern slugs just wouldn't perform from the black powder loads, and we could see that in the holes through the paper: They were tumbling pretty badly, and hitting the target sideways.

We just need someone good enough to hit the target with 5 glande groups at 10,20,30,40,50,and 60 meters...

That's going to be a challenge for just about anyone.

Or maybe we need... I don’t know, perhaps a robotic slinging trebuchet?  Wink

Ya know, I think there was somebody working on that over here Smiley :

That actually would likely be the best solution, because of the consistency of throws. we'd just need to scope in the targeting, which would take some time.

On the original note: I'm going to go ahead and enter the ammunition categories I originally added to the Google Form.

This should give us a decent idea at least of how results are effected, and I will leave it an optional heading for now.

... or decide what the target is after the ammo hits it Grin
