So here is a pic of my most recent project.  I made some hard (alcoholic) cider using wild crab apples i collected on my street, and wild yeast i collected. Which  this thread discussed it. https://slinging.org/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1625356363

I made 2 kinds, normal.  Just apples, yeast and brown sugar. The other is a spiced hard cider. Apples, yeast,  brown sugar,  cinnamon,  nutmeg, and cloves. Wild yeast is a bit slower then the normal stuff u purchase at the grocery store.  It usually takes about 6 to 8 weeks. This stuff took about 12 weeks. Its delicious and fun to make.  This weekend we are gonna warm it up and try it out.

Any estimates on the alcohol content?

Looks great man!

There is a method to determine ABV, but you would need to sacrifice part of the cider.  Basically you can check the specific gravity (density) of a sample, boil it down to half volume (this removes all alcohol), replace it with distilled water, check the specific gravity again, and between the different readings you can tell how much alcohol was there.

It's usually recommended to start with a pint so the boil time is long enough.  So probably better just to drink it and enjoy it.  Wink

Joe, that just sounds like too much work. Lol.  I eventually want to pick up a hydrometer,  but i think i have the word wrong.  The way i test alcohol level is by drinking. More fun and adventurous that way.

Nope.  That's exactly what you would need to measure the specific gravity.  But it's ultimately just a tool to give you information.  Not in anyway required to produce something good to drink.

I knew i was wrong, lol.  There is a tool the home brewers use that beekeepers can use. Beekeepers can use it to measure the water level in the honey.  That is a refractormeter.

Here is a small  update, we been getting lots of snow. I made a quick video showing it off. I talked about the amounts in the video, the dogs have an absolute blast in it. The flock, not so much.

Also i just checked on my beehive right before our most recent storm,  about 3 days ago, they are doing great. Another 4 months, and they are out of the clear for winter.

Great video.  We had a nice snow cover here in Jersey last week but it went up to 58 and melted it all.  I guess snowshoes are a necessity up your way.

Oh yen. In 2 weeks we had 4 storms, we got above 35inches of snow. Lol.  Unfortunately my snowshoes were not packed away and are buried. But now the snow is rock hard, domt sink anyway.

So a couple days ago i went out and checked my hive. I had 2, but one had the queen die. So i merged it with the other for the winter, anyway. That hive has died.  Not sure what happened. We have been getting -40 temps for a few weeks through February.  So nkw i need to purchase more bees and start over again.

We are getting ready to start tapping maple trees, this weekend.  I got these new item, called sap bags. Gonna try those out this year

Here is an update, we just rescued a mule today, in Texas. Tomorrow it was headed to Mexico to get slaughtered for its meat, she is 15months old. I got transportation all set up. In about 3 weeks it will be here in Northern Maine.  But the eventual plan is to get an amish buggy and use it as my vehicle,  since fuel prices are so bad, and right now we have a 8 cylinder jeep. Lol. We have big amish communities that are local, u see em in town everyday.

There's too much traffic here to do that as you well know but for you that's an excellent idea.

Nice one.

You could also use it for logging purposes.

Just bear in mind the phrase: 'stubborn as a mule'
Did not come into popular usage by accident Smiley

I plan on eventually training this mule to do lots of stuff. The muscle for work would be worth it alone.

A trained mule.
Should be fun times ahead Smiley

Be interesting to see if they live up to their reputation.

You got a stable planned for winter ?
