Dumb Project: Ultralight Slings

Hello All!

In September, I'll be hiking the Long Trail in Vermont. Whole thing, End-To-End, 275 miles. In Vermont, backpack weight is important, because switchbacks are for people who shouldn't be on mountains, evidently.

Last September while on the Long Trail, I inflicted slinging as a hobby on a whole class of kids from Johnson College, because I had an absurdly large ball of string with me.

This year, I'd love to inflict slinging on more people, but beforehand I want to test this out: What's the lightest sling design I can make to carry with me to hand out? Include your sling's length, material, and pattern, please!

Break out your scales, everybody. The contest starts now!
      I'll post mine relatively soon.

My sling is 20 grams including the beads that weight 6-8g .
If you use a dyneema cord you have strength and it's super light . My other sling is 10 g but a slightly different design.
My sling design can be found here

i couldn't imagine anything being lighter than my noodle...(that did not even sound right).  just a piece of string with two knots tied in the middle and knotted and looped on the ends.

I made a sling using dacron which is used to protect bow strings from wear and tear. Leather for the pouch and a release tag which adds weight but could be swapped for a lighter material.

Another contender, more for convenience in carrying rather than weight, is a string sling I made with a reindeer antler bead that can be wrapped around your wrist as a bracelet. Out of the way, easy to access and doesn't add any weight to a bag.

These are my low weight hiking slings. Nothing fancy just a workhorse.

...

For the lightest something like an ultra basic two cord sling would be super light.

Awesome! Thanks for the good ideas!

Looks like the seatbelt pattern might be the easiest to make and carry. I'll have to try making and slinging with a few once I figure out where to get some seatbelt from... then I'll fill in the weights, and see where they lie.

Lightese would still look to be Mersa's design. It'll take a few tries to get down, so it would appear.

Thanks!

a leather butterfly pouch and 2mm paracord. I think they weigh under 10grams. Also easy to make and effective.

I would 2nd the seat belt slings.I give those away.  I go to a local u pull it junkyard,  and collect old seat belts,  then take em home. Throw in the washing machine,  and hang dry.  Materials cost us under $.02. Each.  I usually Cary about 3 or 4 as edc,  since I give em away.

The best light sling for me consists of two simple cords tied to two strips of ~1.5cm wide, ~12 cm long leather (dogleash thickness) in an Aussie pouch configuration, without glue.

A simple two string split pouch doesn't cut it for me. Smooth rocks slip out with them in my experience and they don't hold small spherical clay ammo or golfballs at all unless the pouch is very small, and then they can't hold tennisballs or larger ammo anymore. Also you can't dry fire them. I love split pouches but they have to be two flat strips, atleast 1cm wide each.

I never had success with seatbelt slings. I've grown to dislike flat pouches.

a properly sized for me noodle, made of 550 paracord weighs 16 grams, and stores by staying  wrapped around my hand without obstructing it.
