Parents' Weapon of Choice
Jul 21st, 2017 at 6:22pm

This may have been asked on this forum a long time ago. If so, I don't care. When you were growing  up what was your parents' favorite means of dishing out a lesson?
In our house Mom was the disciplinarian. I can only remember Dad hitting me once. It was richly deserved. Mom liked the razor strap. That was her anti-kid weapon.  These days it is a treasured family heirloom (my wife wasn't officially part of the family until my sisters hit her with it) that I proudly possess.
So what, if they had one, was your parents' weapon (s) of choice?

Never been hit by my parents with anything, even a hand. Completely against they're parenting philosophy.

Belt once by my Dad. He changed a lot through 5 kids. By the 5th he was pretty relaxed. (Or worn down, take your pick.) His parenting philosphy was lead by example and he is a genuinely good man. I hope to be as fair minded as him some day.

we got the odd clip, when needed - but never with anything but a hand.
That's not discipline that's sadism.

It was a different time. We were raised old school but never abused. The razor strap was wide and flat. It really didn't hurt that much. We would scream and holler while Mom whooped us then laugh as soon as she left the room.

Hand, rarely.  We had to ignore repeated warnings.  And it usually involved deliberately picking on a younger sibling.

If we really worked at it, Mom would use the flat side of a small hair brush.  She would go to her room afterwards and cry, which upset us more than the spanking did.

Pre Dr. Spock spanking was the norm. Children of the 60's and earlier were generally raised with a "spare the rod" philosophy. I'm sure abuse occurred but it was rare. No one I know personally ever got more than they deserved. I'm not defending it. It was a different time, that's all.

I think the better question is:
What didn't I get hit with?
Kitchen utensils, wire hangers, brooms, shoes, belts(got a scar on my head from a buckle), and even full on pummelling.
Always good for a laugh some of those stories!

My mother was deadly accurate with a dinner fork. It didn't matter where at the table you sat, somehow she got you across the back of the hand.

I got the belt from my Dad. Between 1 and 3 stripes depending on severity.

Mom was more varied. Plenty of mouth washed with liquid soap. Dowel rods were used, those were the ones I detested most. It was was the whipping sound it made on the way that just made it worse. Otherwise general implement that was handy.
