Straightening Braided Slings
Jan 23rd, 2017 at 2:41am

With the recent sling making contest starting up I thought I should get some practice in so went and made two slings in quick succession from cotton string, a simple braid with a split pouch, and what usually happens, happened: they went twisty. These days, because my braiding is much better than it was, I've found the twists gradually reduce with use and aren't that extreme anyway but I thought I'd try and speed up the process especially as one of the new slings was VERY twisted so I wetted it down and then hung it up from the retention loop and attached two hand clamps onto the release cord to hold it straight. After leaving it to dry, it's now beautifully straight. I've now gone through almost all my braided slings and any that have a bit of a twist I've put through the process and its really worked out great so far. I don't know how long it will last or if they will eventually revert but at least for now it's been a great success. I can post before and after pictures later today.

Before,
Strung up,
Close up of the clamps,
After.

It's turned out much straighter so it seems like this really is a good method.

Trying it out. I hope i achieve similar results. This Sling is my best one so far but its twisted a little bit.
I dont have any clamps so im counting on the pull of the wrenches  Tongue

Great! I have to warn you, I've noticed they do twist back a little once they are dry and have been flexed around a little. It seems mine aren't quite as bad as they were anyway though do it still seems worth the effort.

You can also straighten with heat.

Seen a balearic guy do his over a half barrel bbq Smiley
I just leave mine on the radiator.

I wonder if inducing a set into the fibers would affect it's tendency to twist?

Yeah with this method they do twist back after a while. At least to some degree. I didnt get to try it out again, so i dont know if using it will reverse the straightening even more.

But even if it twisted back a little, it is better than before.

Hi, I never have had such a problem. How do you braid them?

When I use fibres from a rope I separate each strand into a bunch of loose fibres, and then I do the braid twisting each strand outside the braid, right strands to the right and left strands to the left, and it finishes completely flat.

Just like Mr. Diego Camuñas do in this video.

Greetings.
