The Shawshank Redemption. The first real date I had with my wife was watching it in my dorm back in undergrad. I won't spoil the ending but I will say it was a very very good ending.

I caught jean de florette purely by accident one evening while trolling for something to watch.
Not my usual cup of coffee (don't drink tea) but just totally compelling performances by all concerned - particularly gerard depardieu.

There are no happy endings, but damn such good films.
