Interest in casting molds?
Mar 2nd, 2015 at 7:09pm

I'm going to have some two part aluminum casting molds made for 57g (2oz) lead glandes. I'd like to see if there is any interest here on the board for me to make more.

I'm definitely interested in getting a mold if this is still a thing. If nothing else, I would like to see some pictures of what the end result was.

I really hope something came of this. I've tried making some clay molds, but they didn't come out well, nor did they last very long.

I am also interested in molds for Glandes.   I've seen videos of folks using sinker molds from fishing, but to have a custom-ish sling glandes mold would be choice provided theya re affordable.

That being said, I am familiar with sand and investment casting and I have contemplated making some reusable sand casting models that can quickly and easily be set up in a small casting frame.  Its a little more work than I originally wanted to commit to but if I have no other choice I may go that route.  Anyone else sand casting Glandes?

No, but I have used pine planks to make glandes. If you want to make a bunch of glandes quickly and cheaply all you need is a chisel and some sandpaper to create a wooden mould.

I would highly recommend using a harder wood than pine, though. Perhaps something like oak would have a longer lifetime than ~7-10 pours like pine.

jaegoor is using silicon moulds.
which are really easy to make and should last quite a long time.
But I do love the simplicity ans effectiveness of the wooden moulds. Smiley

Hmmm, wouldn't a silicone mould be at risk of melting?

IIRC the melting temp of lead is around 300 degrees celsius whilst most Silicone moulds are rated for a temp of around 220-270 degrees celsius?

That said, I am sure lead probably cools quickly enough for it to not be a problem, because I know you can cast pewter in a silicone mould.

You can buy special high-temp silicones. You can even buy silicone cookware that goes in an oven. I believe some silicones can handle 500 degrees or more, so it should be ok for lead.
