Roman Pocket Knife.
Jan 29th, 2015 at 5:51pm

Housed at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. It was found in the Mediterranean area. It's thought to date to 200-300AD.
In addition to the knife-fork-spoon, there is a toothpick, small spatula, thought to be for spreading sauces, and a spike, possibly for getting shellfish out of shells.

I'm amazed. I never thought they could make things like this back then. just goes to show what people are capable of even without fancy technology

Folding knives were actually quite common in the Middle Ages. What was different was the fact they had no back springs. The relied on pressure to keep the single blade in place.

not only utility tools but there was a greek who invented a pocket computer.

People always confuse intelligence and technology levels.

Our ancestors were every bit as intelligent as us. They just had different technology. But within their technological niche they were actually much more skilled than the majority of modern people.

It's a shame the knife blade on that knife has rusted.
Is the rest made of silver ?
This wasn't a cheap item at the time, that's for sure.

Yeah C_A that was silver, and judging by the way the blade oxidated I may dare to say it was high quality steel.... for normal iron or low quality steel does not make these crusts when rusting... but of course take it with a grain of salt.

Mauro.

Given that you have archaeological degrees and a fair bit of blacksmithing experience - I'll call that an entire salt cellar Smiley
