Ammo
Aug 24th, 2014 at 12:48am

I saw the Funda-Ball ammo thread, but i decided to open a new thread because I am including a link and everything.  I think that this stress ball type of ammo that the "King of Random"  came up with would be perfect for Funda-ball.   They cost almost nothing to make, are durable, they can be any size you want, and did I mention, cheap! Actually the best - and safest - ammo I'm currently are sockballs.

Take a sock. Fold the foot part in half and roll it up to the straight part.

Put your hand in the open end and hold the rolled up part in your other hand. Twist the rolled up part about 180 degrees, and push that through the leg bit. Do that again till you run out of sock and use a couple of elastic bands round the ball to keep it from unravelling.

This is what i use to teach slinging. They fly well, as far as tennis balls - but are 100% safe !

Having now had - on seperate occasions - 15 scouts and 30 young farmers running around in a field with slings and sock balls. I can categorically state that it's almost impossible to hurt someone with a sockball.  And believe me they all tried !
Cheap, effective and safe.

the rusty balls are essentially a blackjack fired from a sling. Extremely dangerous to sling at people. Great for target shooting as they don't bounce - but should never be aimed at a person.

I would never sling rusty balls at people i don't want to hurt.
Instead i've slung bloons filled with flour (much less dense than sand) safely into reenactors. And tennis balls painted black, and tomatoes.
They had shields and some helmets and some armor, so less dangerous than the dull edged metal swords we use..

Basket is right.

For now, in reenactment also, I slung fresh clay balls at a shield covered Roman. It made a nice stain on the too clean  shield Cheesy

I couldn't find this in the forum. How heavy are balearic competition glandes? does anyone have a photo? are they made of clay? I'm thinking of making a mold!

i have made some of the rusty balls but mine when i throw them they flatten out(im thinking the air resistance) so they curve a little bit at longer range which scares me because i dont want to lose them in the woods or the lake next to the feild where i most often throw i was wondering if yall knew of anyway to make some sling bullets like the football shaped sling bullets  in my rusty balls i put flower i havent tried sand i may do that also

@jeffbonds thats strange .rusty balls flatten out on impact.if this happens mid air then something is wrong with the construction.
if you are in the woods why dont you use plain rocks?

Balearic competitors currently only use rocks.

Every slinger uses different weight rocks - these can vary from as little as 100 grams on up to 750grams.

And as these rocks get smashed if you hit the diana and it's illegal to take rocks from the beaches (which everyone does)  it is becoming something of an issue.

here we see a beach in mallorca just covered in sling missiles:
...

Rusty balls will deform as they leave the sling if thrown hard - something luis pon livermore has remarked upon on more than one occasion.
I'm also not a fan. Jaegoor rarely throws hard and doesn't - that I've seen - use rusty balls for anything otjer than low power close up throws.
Given that that's how most people throw for competition it's not much of an issue. But the few who throw hard at targets - luis first among them - rusty balls just don't work.

For me it would make sense to switch to moulded clay missiles. These could be of any weight the slinger wished and would be 100% uniform. Also there are lots of little pottery manufacturers in the islands who would welcome the out of season work.
The slingers name could be embedde din the missile, saving a lot of time with marker pens Smiley

But seperating spanish slingers from their machismo and love of big rocks - that's going to be a very long and difficult process.

And trying to get them to use tennis balls for distance competitions - that's probably going to take me some years to get the messages across.
