Yes, they are dwarves, but Russian translation uses same word as "gnome"

I didn't like the hobbit near as much as lotr. It was too much Disney fluff for a devoted fan like myself!
Hopefully there is more slinging footage in the upcoming movies!!
I, for one, expected this. If you compare the books of the Hobbit with LOTR it seems pretty obvious that even Tolkien was writing for a less devoted or sophisticated audience. I kinda think of the Hobbit as Tolkien's version of a Tween - Teen Book...
The thing that got under my skin with this movie was the Goblin King's last words... Almost killed the rest of the movie for me actually...

Nor I. I'll wait 'til all three movies are made, and on DVD. Much cheaper to do that, than pay for three trips to the cinema. And what I don't get, is why "the Hobbit" takes three movies when it's just two skinny, little books, but LOTR is three thick books and only warrants one DVD/movie per book?!?!

Money aside, it's because 3 hours is hardly enough time to do each book justice

Watched it again last night, I found it interesting that the oldest dwarf was the one to use the sling while the youngest was using a slingshot. I wonder if the age vs which type of weapon used was a conscious decision by Hollywood? Since they had both, at least they would have realized they aren't the same thing; sling vs. sling shot. I wonder if Tolkien as boy would have had a sling?

The sling isnt mentioned at all in anything by Tolkien, to the best of my knowledge.

I think Tolkien threw rocks by hand as a kid. He mentions Bilbo having a good throwing arm and chucking stones at birds but no sling.
Elven bowmen were the snipers in his books. I bet they would have been great slingers having all the ages of the world to hone their skills

It's never mentioned or shown anywhere else... and we never see a stone or bullet shot. Not sure its actually a sling... could be a weight on a chain or cord... you know... a flexible weapon of some sort. Hopefully we'll get some clarification when the extended version and appendices comes out.

I am sad to confirm that the weapon used by Dori is not a sling. The extended version "making" cut shows they are a bola-type weapon, not a sling.
Sad, because a sling would have been cooler, and because I was convinced it was a sling.

2 movies would have been perfect with the way they are now. I'm deferring judgment until Smaug makes his appearance. It does feel kind of "fluffy" compared to the LOTR movies which I don't like. But then again, the Hobbit as a book had a different feel than the LOTR's books. Also, the music, which added so much to the LOTR movies, is not up to par IMO.
