Netting needles
Mar 17th, 2013 at 5:07pm

Hey everybody. I have been wanting to make some nets but don't have any netting needles. Anybody know of a store that sells them? And if I wanted to make my own netting needles what materials have people found to be the best to work with?

I might be getting some of these-

Try fishing shops, etc.
Heck, most of the people here have just made their own.
Here is Arcane's netting needle, cut and filed from PVC-

I also uploaded a pic of some different types of netting needles, I like the "a" one

We use needles like these above everytime we have to make or modify the nets we use for fishing  Smiley

Mauro, how do you wind type B? It makes no sense to me.
Otherwise, I would probably use it.

Pinch the end of your string against the flat side of the needle with your thumb. Bring the string around the inner needle so the bight is on the back and your ends are on the front. Wrap the working end down between the little legs and up the back. Now wrap the string around the inner needle from the other side...lather rinse repeat.

Squirrel, I just noticed that type B we use is a bit different from that one above.
Let's say the one above there is equal to our ones, but it's half of it. I can't explain this better but I'll make pics of our ones tomorrow and will show you as soon as possible.
Greetings,
Mauro.

I only had some juniper sticks that I make bow drill sets out of. It's easy enough to carve but chips bad. This is my first shuttle. Ten inches long (I think four too long,) and an inch wide (could be a little wider) and the cut at the end is a half inch too deep. Holds 30 feet of 1/8 inch jute.

I made one by sawing a 3/4 in pvc segment in half and tapering the nose. I then taped a paper clip to t the front and the back inside the curve pointing forwards and backwards. I wrap the string around the paperclip ends. It works well enough. I'll see about getting a picture up when I can.

Thank you Asemery.
I might try a PVC molded one... hot water can soften PVC, right?
