KNOTS!

So with the extra room in TSG, I believe we'll have room for a 'knots' section.

This will cut out room in the tutorials as well as give the new guys the basics for their slings.

So, Name EVERY single kind of knot you might use when making a sling. That way I'll know what needs done.

I'll start.

Overhand
Double Overhand
Figure 8
Bowline
Standard Whipping
West County Whipping

Yall have any of your own?

Ashley's stopper knot?

I use that one wherever I don't have a release tab

Thank you for that, steven!
I have used- spanish hitching, an unidentified awesome knot for making finger loops.
Sheep Shank pouch... did we cover the variations on that, Dan?

With non-braided/paracord slings I usually use the following:
*Overhand Loop for my retention cords. (Simple, easy, and slippage is less of a factor than with the bowline.)
*Ashley (Oysterman's) Stopper Knot for retention knot. (Provides a sure grip without the overkill bulk of bigger knots, like the monkey's fist. Excellent for getting a surer grip on thin slings.)

For braided slings, one variety that I've played with and liked is the Matthew Walker knot/Double Matthew Walker knot. A bit tricky, but either variation works well as a retention knot, and looks a bit prettier and symmetrical than simply doing an overhand knot.

I rarely bother with anything other than a simple overhand knot with braided slings since I don't feel like bothering with the Matthew Walker. However I thought I'd throw it out there since it makes a pretty good release knot as well. Smiley

I use chain hitch (I think it's the right name, it's the basic for crocheting) for my releases "tab"...

That's actually a really good idea, Caldou. I never thought of that. I use a piece of leather tied onto the end of my release cord.

I also like Mathew Walker variations for ending braids, and use them from time to time. The nice thing is they are adaptable to any number of strands.

Also, a constrictor knot (http://www.netknots.com/rope_knots/constrictor-knot) is useful whenever you need to bind several strands together. I especially like it for securing the dropped strands when decreasing from 16 to 8 strands in a Peruvian sling, or when temporarily securing strands for tying a Mathew Walker or some other more difficult stopper knot. It can also serve as a quick whipping.

How about splices. Like hollow braid splice or long bury splices.

Alpine butterfly for the David Morningstar style cestros sling.
I like the San Diego jam knot for attaching to pouches.

Good stuff here guys. We have Lund's string sling tutorial but we might make a new one with brighter pictures and a 5 and 7 strand variation.

So We'll cover the Sheep Shank knot in the knot section, and a brief section on the sling in the sling section.  Smiley

Keep em coming. There are a lot of knots I've never even heard of hear so yall are definitely helping.  Smiley

Don't forget the crown knot. Great for ending release cords. Make a crown knot, make a few stitches with sewing thread and you have something really stable.

Further: (tight) marline hitching. It is more stable than standard whipping. I use it instead of west country whipping, which I don't like.

How about tucking, blending and thinning? Show people how to get away from all that whipping.
