Bow strings
Jan 28th, 2013 at 8:14am

Decided I need a couple bow strings in my "gotta go now" pack. Ordered the b50 and started practicing with walmart hemp jewelry thread. I'm making 3strand single loop flemish strings. The first one has four threads per strand and is three eighths in diameter and weighs a full oz Shocked

Seond string is made with nine threads per strand; weighs half an oz, is three sixteenths inches in diameter and is 79" long. I think it would be ok for a six foot emergency 40-45lb bow.

Hell I'm in need of a new bow string! Care to trade with something? Arrowheads perhaps??
By the way your string looks beautiful, care to show pics of the second?
And if you would make a tutorial, I'd gladly put it in the Index!
Greetings,
Mauro.

Thanks Mauro!
Do you want a 3 strand hemp string or one made with b50? I'll also write up a "how to".

Well I'm not really looking for something historical, I'd prefer something that would last long, so I bet b50 would be the best?
But I don't really know the differences so it's up to you  Smiley
Pyramidal iron arrowheads are a good trade? How many? Which diameter??
Thanks!
Mauro.

They look good walter. Manufactured Bow strings have ridiculous prices. I can buy a roll of B-50 and a roll of serving string for half the price of one bow string.
And with all those bows I make, it would get expensive to buy strings for all of them. Espicailly since my archery budget is near $0.

And with those rolls I can make more than a half dozen strings. So instead of $25 a string, its more like $1.  Smiley

I was pretty good at slinging like 10 years ago.

I bought a roll of Dacron, a couple of spools of serving material, and I made my own adjustable stringing jig and also a serving "tensioner" from a simple strip of milk-carton plastic and a wing-nut.

Total investment likely less that one commercial string.

The jig is just standard lumber bits and dowels, and a couple of wing-nuts for the adjustment parts.

B50. How long is your bow and what is the draw
weight?

Pyramidal iron is good. When you get the string, you decide how many Smiley
One for a 3/8" diameter arrow would be a fair enough trade I think.

Thanks Dan Smiley Are you making 2 or 3 strand strings? I got the b50. Its real thin stuff. What do you use for serving to bulk up the nocking area?

Bikewer, could or would you post a pic or two of your string jig?

Lol what one? If making bow strings is easy and cheap (and I have the strongest respect for any humang being with enough patience to braid something) forging arrowheads is easy for me too, it just takes me ten minutes to make one so expect more than just one!
But 3/8'' should be 9,5 millimeters right? I'll measure my bow this evening but it should be 25 or 30 lbs more or less!
Bow strings makers, post your pictures and share your experiences!!
Greetings,
Mauro.

They're actually twisted, not braided.  A braided string would be more likely to fail, as it has many more spots where the strands rub unevenly on one another, and where the stress isn't evenly distributed.  For something thin, but very strong, like a bowstring, you need something that is twisted.

Not so much of a correction, I just didn't want people on this forum who are used to braiding slings to go around braiding bowstrings only to have them snap in their faces  Grin
