Accuracy vs. Power
Sep 21st, 2012 at 9:35pm

Hello again.
This has most likely been touched upon before, but I didn't spot it. That being said, it could be right in front of my face.
How big is the trade-off between power and accuracy?  I am trying to work on my marksmanship skills, and finding my more powerful throws are way off the mark, and my lightest are hitting reasonably well.
How long does it take to put the huge, injury-inducing, big-splash-in-the-lake-causing, Water-melon-didn't-stand-a-chance, Rule 6 type power into a reasonably accurate shot?  It has to be possible, or the sling would not have been useful as an ancient weapon for hunting anything tougher than a mouse, but I can't seem to reliably hit a mark at more than about half power.
For those who will ask: My usual sling, 1 meter long folded, Balearic,  smooth, perfectly shaped stones between one and four ounces (30-120g). Range 60 feet.

I'm far for both accuracy and power, but from what I've read here and there, power will come along with accuracy, when your form will be close to perfect, you will be able to power up you shots without messing them.

I agree with Caldou. he has a good point. however. you can go fairly high up the power rank if you work hard and practice a lot. i often pick a target, and i can hit a telephone pole from nearly 20 meters away with around 80% accuracy slinging with about half power. However, if i sling at full power, then i literally cannot hit the wall in front of me.

I have had the same problem. I realized that the more I stressed power, the slower I would progress. Just sling for accuracy, dont worry about the power, it will come with time.

The topic has been brought up many times but in that we always have a high turnover of members that's fine.  Many of us have found that if we sling at approximately 80% of our full power our accuracy is good and there's not a big drop off in projectile velocity.  In fact, often by not slinging with all of our might our shot is more powerful because our form is better and our muscles aren't all tensed up.  Using perfect form, using your entire body, twisting at the hips, and being loose and relaxed are much more effective than trying to do it all with arm strength.

Go for accuracy right off the bat.  Most members go for power and get a lot of bad habits that they have to break when they start trying for accuracy, myself included.  Keep in mind that at 1/2 to 3/4 power is still faster than most professional baseball pitchers can do, so if you hit something, it will leave a mark.

As Rat Man said, usually 70-80% power is standard for sligning target slinging.

AS Bill said, even half power would still leave a mark (understatement).

90% power from a long time slinger is very impressive and would be very lethal on the ancient battlefield.

And 100% power is Terrifing, espically from a novice slinger.   Wink

Sling naturally. Your mind will make the calculation as to how hard you need to throw.

Cool. All good to know.  I shall stress form from now on.

There 9 Rules Of Fort Ontario: My signature is Rule 6, one of my favorites, since it was asked.  The others are quite simple, but are for another time and place. However, one should always obey Rule 6: If you're not sure, assume you've applied insufficient firepower.

I can hit a garage door (3m x 2.5m) from 80 - 100m away, using 70 - 80g projectiles, with about 70 - 80% accuracy. That uses about 80% of my potential power.

Lately though, i struggle to hit targets (50 x 75cm) that are 40m away. Don't know why.

I tried getting it on video, but everytime i focus on getting it right on video, i over focus and overthink the shot and end up looking like i took up the sling yesterday.

Estimating "percentage power" is extremely subjective. How do you measure it and what exactly do you mean; that the projectile is going at 80% or whatever it may be, of the maximum? If you sling at what you perceive as being "twice as hard" it's very unlikely your projectile will go twice as fast. It's even unlikely it will have twice the kinetic energy, which is not a linear function.

Slinging should never feel forced. If you're slinging hard enough to tense up, you're probably actually losing velocity. Look for that sweet spot feeling where both accuracy and power are at a max.

We,slingers know that 80% of power is extremely subjective. Smiley
Slinging relaxed, smoothly, fluid, fast with good form can give both accuracy and power. What you train with, that's what's going to be your best. I've been always slinging with most of my power, speed and that's what i'm the most accurate with.

A 1 meter long sling folded would be considered quite long from most people's point of view.  Personally I've always done really well with longer slings.   What I found is that you can slow the rotation of your sling down a bit by using heavier ammo and in turn add quite a bit of power to the impact. The slower rotation has (for me) given the same effect as artificially slowing my sling throw with lighter stones.  This is a complicated subject and what I just wrote may not apply to everyone.  So, without going into all the variables,  that is something that has worked for me in the past and might work for you as well.

Shorter answer still is that it does take a lot of practice.  And if you start to get complacent and forget to do the things you've already learned you can be back at square 1 very quickly. Even if you've been slinging for a long time.
