Slinging in Hunger Games (maybe?)
Sep 18th, 2012 at 9:56pm

In the first Hunger Games the author says Rue used a "slingshot".

Was that a common mistake or was it a real rubber powered slingshot?

Just wondering about what you guys thought.

I believe it was indeed a slingshot, not a sling.

Yep that was just a slingshot. Often employed by kids working in agriculture. It's unfortunate slings weren't used but when you have most people that only have a week of combat trainging, sling use is unlikely.

the author referred to the nock on an arrow as a notch so obviously she knows precious little about weapons.

Yeah, well, so do most people that read the books. Culture isn't designed for the analytical specialist like ourselves.    Wink

If they had one in the games, I'd like to think it would look something like this:
I whipped this up last night, I've been in a PVC molding mood lately. The rest is more grey blind lift cord and silver micro cord.

The finish is my attempt at a faux carbon fiber, done with black, grey and silver.

That's awesome bro! How does she throw?

Also, reading through the HG series I often complicated how slings would have been utilized and I think they would have been more likely improvised by some agricultrual/woodland kid that already knows how to use them than being implelemented by the game makers. Mainly because the tributes only have one week to prep and I know how I looked after week of slinging. Lets just say I wouldn't want rely on my sling in a fight to the death then.  Wink

Wow. If they already had some skill, and were able to practice in the capital....
Anyway, please excuse this if it offends anyone, but I do NOT like the hunger games. or any book like that.
the person who wrote it made it a good book, but DO NOT rely on it for any sort of advice on primitive weapons.... I have some split arrows to prove it!
and other stuff.........
for that matter, do not rely on any one source for information!
(I sorta despise quite a few books.....) They are horrendously inaccurate!!!!!!
EDIT- I was ranting sooo much I forgot about the sling! NICE sling!!!!!!
How does it throw?
it looks cool, but which cord is release and which is retention?

I remember seeing the movie with my wife and recall that all the weapons in the games were very synthetic with lots of silver and unnatural aesthetic design cues.

I don't know how it throws yet, but it sure dry swings ridiculously fast...probably because the pouch is so heavy. Ironic that I painted it to mimic something so light.

Squirrelslinger, its based on Thomas's captive release caulk tube pouch. The retention end is the one with the Mr. Bill smile and the release is the shark fin end.

I originally thought the pouch was made from foam! Shocked Grin Shocked
Cast PVC, you say?
thats a new one....
How do you even cast anything other than epoxy, glass, cement, metals, etc?

Molding (or modeling if you prefer) like clay or dough, not casting. It's a chunk of 2" PVC pipe cut to shape, heated till soft and then formed into shape.

Oh.
Thanks!
Let me guess- how hot do you need to get it to shape the stuff?
100 degrees F?
200?
I have heard hot-boiling water?

That looks like you have a specific ammunition in mind, golf balls or steel ball bearings?

I bet if the open front end were held slightly higher than the back it would hold any ammo smaller than the inside diameter of the pouch. You'd have to throw in a way that wouldn't spin stabilize the projectile, but that's how I throw naturally. The collapsed section of PVC at the back end was a great idea. I may have to copy this design! I'd love to know how you made the paint look like carbon fiber.

Massi - WTF? It's called a sling. You use it to throw rocks farther and faster than you could otherwise. That's all.
