Fig. 8 Stances
Sep 7th, 2012 at 10:47am

Good day, slingers Smiley It has been long disputed for the type of stance a slinger should get while using the illusive figure 8 style. The two main school of thoughts are those of a  parallel orientation  ( described by Brian Grubbs) and the 45° to the target. What are the differences - (the slight ones) in these styles(orientation of the sling during the last 3/4 of the throw, width of the wind-up circle and so on?
I personally use the 45° type in a somewhat boxing stance(front foot turn slightly to right for a right handed slinger, bend knees), with the extended arm(like Brian Grubbs) .

I find for figure 8, parallel works best for me. I think I go past parallel til I am looking at my target out of the corner of my left eye. I looked up baseball pitching tutorials, they helped with the stepping forward.
On the other hand, I use a 45 degree stance when using helicopter/byzantine.

I can get way more of my body behind the stone if I begin sideways (like Brian).  Before Brians video the 45deg stance worked well enough, then the "Commanche style", aka fig8 but pouch held more to the side) came and made some confusion before Brian made his video and tied it all together (for me, at least).

Oh and I have to add, Brian Grubbs has his style down to a science! Here's a big shout out to him and the others on here who have made tutorials, thanks amigos!

I stand with both feet side by side, parallel to the target.  Whether you step into the throw or not can dictate what stance feels right for you.  I used to stand with my feet staggered.

I don't really use the figure-8 anymore. However, when I do I more or less do what Brian Grubbs does, at least in the first 2/3rds of the cast; feet together, and at a 90 degree angle from target, move front foot forward and maintain 90 degree angle, but during the final cast/follow-through, I pivot into something sort of like a modern Sabre fencer's footwork, with the front foot facing the target dead-on, and the rear foot somewhere between 45 and 90 degrees. (Heels may or may not be aligned.)

In my experience footwork is important, but if you're going to assume a stance where you face 90ish degrees to the side, you have to pay an equal amount of attention to how the upper body is oriented as well.
A lot of people think they're facing 90 degrees, but more often than not have this bad habit of facing the opponent with their upper body more than they realize; resulting in an awkward twist in the waist that can throw you off more often than not.)

On a 45 degree or there about .. while winding the 8 ..  then a forward foot step relatively short .. toe pointing at target .. upper torso rotates to face the target .. weight transfers to front foot .. while cast is being made.  Think of an abbreviated hard ball pitch being done with a short stride ..
