    A good rule of thumb is to make your sling's folded length half of your height.  Try that first but experiment with other lengths also. Not sure if you can buy it loose in most places, the way I do it is to buy a massive ball of cord then cut into 30-50cm portions, divide the plys(?), soak and then thin out the rubbish with your fingernail. It's quite time consuming and you lose a lot of thickness but it makes nice material.
