That is an excellent question. And strangely very difficult to answer. There are so many variables. The thickness of the cord, the number of strands, the type of braid, the stretch of the cord, is the braid being puled very tight or not.
Double the length is certainly a safe bet. Likely more than you need. Most of the slings I do have 16 strands, but are doubled up in an 8 strand braid (makes it really easy to drop strands when tapering). I usually measure out for double the length, but always end up having plenty to spare. I just finished a sling and had about 3 ft extra at the end.
I've looked online for this kind of thing before, and see a lot of 1.5X recommendations. I know double the length will probably give you plenty of extra (if you have the cordage to spare). Probably somewhere in between is a better mark. I'm always just worried about running out too early, so intentionally go too long.
