Great thought StaffSlinger.  I did a video with my interpretation of the technique also.  Here's the link to the topic: https://slinging.org/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1676541844.  This was a very fun exploration.

Thanks for the advice.  I'm doing much better with the underanded.  We just got a new dog with way too much energy that is ball crazy and came already knowing how to fetch so we go out to the abandoned tennis courts daily.  I'm not even trying for accuracy right now, just lobbing it trying to get comfortable with the movement.  The "throwing" motion before the release is not working well for me, bu to t I've never been coordinated or athletic.  To keep the dog busy, I did manage to throw the ball one way while walking in another and I was pretty proud of that.

When I first introduce people to slinging, I usually start them off with an underhand release.  Sling Moustachio has a good video showing this method: https://youtu.be/I6kIZZQlW84.  Something I'll mention though is that you don't need to rotate the sling as fast as he is.  You can rotate and release it more slowly and controlled at first until you get used to the release point.  And when practicing underhand, you don't need to permanently adopt this as the style you're going to use forever.  This is about training your brain to recognize when to release the sling.  Once you're doing it well with underhand, you can try out other styles.

I'd recommend sticking with tennis balls for at least a few sessions and see if you get used to them.  No one loves them, but they're such a common projectile and no real threat to anything around you.  Other options will be dependent on what kind of areas you have to sling in.

@jackparsons

If you are having trouble with the release timing. Try tying a rope to a ball. Either surround the ball with a net/balloon and tie a string to that, or just tie the string in a net around the ball with a long tail.  Then try throwing the ball with the tail on it. It is much more intuitive than a sling. But once you can throw this device (aka foxtail) well, switching to a sling should be an easy transition.

Jaegoor has taught kids with this and I think it's a great idea.

Is wind factored into Distance Records?
Does a distance record qualify if I'm shooting downwind with 30knots of wind for example?

Even though I dont ever expect to get anywhere close to a record, I'm wondering if there are standards to respect for distance record attempts? if so what are they?

@Primate This is unclear to me. I don't think there are standards for distance records, especially with the sling.

For example, the furthest disc golf disc throw was 338m, but it was with a 40mph tailwind. The previous record was 263m with a 10mph tailwind.

So, for most things, I don't think it is tracked. It's not like a track competition where there is a limited allowable windspeed for a record to be counted.

Interesting, seems wind factor would make a big enough difference that it should be considered. With some wind you would have shot to the other side of that lake in your "slinging as far as I can" video. Is there any official distance record? if so what is it? Thanks

A disc has a bearing surface, not a pebble. For me, the problem isn't comparable.

it seems that in the past Guinness records there are no standards other than sling and have an official measure the range. I don't even know if they measured bounce. and they probably used a wheel to measure.
in the current record the thrower used a dart and a sling that can't sling stones and replaced the older record done with stone instead of making a new category

Wind is important and should definitely be taken into account but it is not easy to measure. I'd suggest at least recording the direction of the wind at slinger's position.
from our contemporary slingers you can watch videos on Irongoober's channel he has done some 300+m throws.
from older slingers you can see the records https://www.slinging.org/ranges.html
Larry Bray 437m 52g stone 130cm sling
below a picture with the stone and sling and a lead projectile that would go further. picture is from CA or Larry Bray I don't remember who posted it.

check out also the records from Vernon Morton and Melvin Gaylor they slung some heavyweight stuff with probably shorter slings

If anyone can film a video like IG I'd like to see it, even finding a place to sling that far is difficult.

Something like the wind is difficult to control for, it's not like we can create a sheltered area 500m across. Another one is the altitude, large flat areas at significant altitude don't occur everywhere.

I think the best you can do is take your shot and record the conditions.

I'm not sure, wind definitely makes a difference, but only if it is like 10m/s (20+mph) or so. Less than than and I don't notice much difference. If I had a tailwind, I suppose I might have made it across, there was a bit of a head/cross-wind that day... But until I do, it doesn't count!!! :0)

I live by the sea. I tested this morning on the beach and there were gusts of wind about 25 m/s. I threw perpendicular of the wind.
1) The gusts push the sling a little to the side.
2) Bullets fly straight. About 1/5 of bullets at the top of the trajectory drifted due probably to a gust at the precise moment.

When the wind is strong, it's gusty that it is impossible to measure. The wisest thing if you want to break records is to sling the days without wind.

Primate, thanks to your question. It's an excellent gateway to observe the trajectory of a slingstone.
It has the least kinetic energy at the top of its trajectory. It falls back at that moment. A strong gust can therefore deflect it at this moment.
For the range, it is necessary to test the real impact of a headwind or back.

Nice! interesting way to measure by shooting perpendicular to the wind and seeing the drift!

If I'm shooting a projectile straight downwind at 100mph and there is 20mph of wind at my back, the projectile feels 80mph of apparent wind. If I'm shooting it into the wind the projectile would feel 120mph.
Since the kinetic energy in wind increases exponentially in proportion to its speed, a small increase or decrease in wind speed is a large increase or decrease in power potential. So adding or removing that extra 20mph from the apparent wind is significant in term of aerodynamic drag especially when comparing: upwind vs downwind. That is a 40mph apparent wind difference.

If there are no rules on wind factor then I'll be aiming downwind when I'm good enough to attempt it.

Thanks for all the replies  Cheesy
