How much material is needed for a balearic sling ?

In terms of fibre most of my balearic slings are 40-60g @24''

In terms of pruned fibre that's around 80-90g, which I can get from about 120-130g of sisal or manila rope.

Are you using fibres or string? How thick are you going for? How long? It's hard to say. Best method is to start making one and see how it goes Cheesy

I have made some with string, but i want to try using fibers too. (do they work the same way ?)

Can corn husks be used to make a sling I got some after shucking corn a week or two ago and they are still fairly flexible

You tell us Cheesy The best way to find out is experimentation so experiment away! I don't know how they'll hold up in the long term but I could maybe see them working for a few days.

I've been saving corn husks for a month or so, and should have enough as soon as this past sunday's dinner leftovers dry out.  I'm tearing them into strips as I go.

I don't think it will end up being very strong or durable, but it will be good practice braiding before I disassemble sisal rope.

Go for it!

for manufactured projectiles I’ve heard of teardrop shaped projectiles as well as biconical which is better/more damaging ?

Depends on the material and the weight more than the design in my opinion. Also what the target is made of. Also, a pointed biconical that lands point first will penetrate more than smash, a round or tear drop will smash more than penetrate. As with everything in slinging, it depends on the context.

Teardrop is more aerodynamically favourable IIRC, however glande shape is much more widely used, my guess is because it's just simpler to use and sits in the sling symmetrically.
It may be that aerodynamically they are very close in performance so glande dominates with practicality advantage.

Make both and test them.
I think, that the best projectile for slinging is personal preference. If you like one shape more, use it.

What do you need damage for ?
If you do target slinging, it is better to use a less damaging projectile, because your target will last longer.
If you want to sling for distance, it is about how aerodynamic the projectile is, but you will still need a good rifle spin.(if you dont have a good rifle spin, you should practice with rocks before making own ammo)

I don’t actually need damage I was just curious because I’ve seen both and wondered what the pros and cons of both were

Definitive testing is still needed, but I think most agree long and thin.

how do you keep release knots from moving or coming undone? I'm having trouble with mine in both cotton and jute cords.
