Sliiiiiiiiiing in the waaaaaaateeeer!
Mar 31st, 2012 at 8:17pm

Sling in the water: not the title of a famous Deep Purple song, but what happened to me this morning!
A friend of mine came here, and we went for a walk at the beach.
Full of people, full of girls. I also managed to have a picture with one of them but she told me she was already engaged, damn'it!
By the way, we walked until we reached an isolated beach, a bay between two groups of rocks, and we begun slinging.
He was slinging for the first time in his life and really enjoyed the sport; he's a knight in a re-enactment group and he teaches me something about swords whenever we have some free time.
By the way, at a certain moment he released the knot, but the loop slipped out of his finger and... the whole sling, with the stone still inside the pouch, took off and landed on water!
It suddenly sunk and resurfaced some minutes ago. I had a good bath in this cold water of March.
By the way, we continued slinging after I recovered the sling, and the question is the following: how do you think salt water will interfere with the leather of which the sling is made??
It's a stupid question, because we continued slinging for the rest of the day - man, I also shoot at ducks, getting very close to them; I didn't really mean to kill them but I enjoyed the feeling of hunting! But do you think a bath in salt water may change some leather's properties??
Greetings and long live girls in bikini!!
Mauro.

I would have thought that it would have stiffened the sling alot, but then it probably depended how tough the leather was to start. I know my thin leather re-enactment shoes turned rock hard after getting soaked and then being left to dry in a warm room stuffed with news paper.
I reckon however, even with this stiffness, if you wear it in again, it may actually add benefits to it. It wont wreck the sling by any means, but I wouldnt do it to your favourite ones Wink

Sounds brilliant, out slinging on an italian beach with a friend, and to be honest the italian girls on the beach dont sound bad either Wink Hope you have a good Easter!

Salt water can rot things easily.... but you're probably taking decent care of the sling pouch and if it hasn't shown any adverse affects....

I've dropped leather slings in normal water and I've never had any issues.

I could be wrong on this but if it were my leather sling I'd wash it with either saddle soap or a good neutral commercial soap like Ivory.  It'll be quite dry after that so I'd then apply mink oil or Neatsfoot Oil to it.  Salt is very corrosive.  BTW, did you say something about a picture of an Italian girl in a bikini?

I heard when they taped the new "Robin Hood" with Russle Crowe on the beach the props guys were cursing. All the guys wearing some kind of leather were splasing around in the water and sword fighting it was really hard on the leather and to keep it looking good. They had too scrub everything down afterwords: belts, sheaths, bow handles, and a bunch of other stuff.

I think it kind of turns the leather back into rawhide and dries it out. Salt water is pretty damaging to everything whether it guns, mechanical stuff, or even leather and jute. If you do what RM said and treat it it sould remain looking pretty good.

It's like 40 degrees here so it's not quite beach season, heck most people aren't even wearing shorts yet. I guess the people there are just more commited IDK. Definitely looking forward to our summer though.

Thank you all guys!
I didn't think about that RM, but this morning me and another friend went to a VERY WONDERFUL place were we slung a while, and the sling worked correctly.
But since there was snow melting it took a little water as well; anyway it doesn't seem to have affected the way it works.
I'm really spreading the word of the sling these days!
Just wait for some incoming pictures.... (the one with the girl has been taken with the girl's camera, I don't have it  Angry ).

By the way, as I wrote on the topic about hardening leather I use boiling salted water to do so; but luckily the Adriatic Sea was not boiling yesterday... oh well I'm going to use soap on my sling just to be sure  Smiley
Greetings,
Mauro.

The leather now has a lot of salt in it, it will cause the leather to crack.  Soak the sling in fresh water for an hour or so, then oil it with some type of animal or vegetable oil to replacce the oils that came out in both soakings.  Olive oil or lard will work very nicely.  I have a lot of dogs, so I prefer olive oil, the lard must smell nice to the dogs because they will eat the leather and as an earlier post by RatMan pointed out, eating leather can be very bad for a dog.

That's  what I do as well. Salt + Leather = problems.

All right I washed my sling with normal water. I'm going to add oil once it dries, and I'll let it dry outside my window.

I'm so proud it has some evidence of use!

With that said, relatively brief exposure to salt water, then being washed off with fresh water shouldn't have much of an effect. I wouldn't expect an issue in the Dead Sea, and the Mediterranean isn't that salty.

Grin By the way it's a very hot sunny morning today and I just took my sling from the window: the oil dried away leaving it exceptionally soft and smooth, a true pleasure to touch  Shocked
Thanks guys!
