A lot of you have mentioned melting wax into your slings. Why and how is this typically done?
Thanks,
Ben

You'll probably get several answers to this and I'm not the most experienced when it comes to plant fiber slings. This is what I do based off of other posts, advice and trial and error. So far it works great.
I make bars of beeswax/linseed oil (or neatsfoot oil) that can be used to cure your fiber cord like sisal or hemp. It also works well to preserve and bring out color in bone, antler and bare hardwood.
The formula for making the beeswax and linseed oil mix is 2.5 oz of wax, chopped and about 1/4 cup of linseed (or neatsfoot) oil. Place into a coffee mug and microwave for 2.5 min, 30 seconds at a time stirring between each interval. Pour into paper cups and let cool. Makes 2-4 litttle cakes. You can also just make one big cake. The cake has the consistency of chapstick, a tad thicker.
You can also just rub wax onto the completed braid. I started out rubbing an old candle into the sling then hitting it with the hair dryer.

I just use some bow string wax, if I do at all. It kinda smothes the fibers down and general makes the sling a little neater and stiffer.

I was pretty good at slinging like 10 years ago.

I use Arizona Killer BeesWax by the cake. I rub it directly into the groups of cords prior to braiding. It enables you to braid very clean and tight especially with slippery cord like linen and mason line. When I'm done I may rub the cords down again with the cake of wax and then I put it in a cookie tin, like you get Christmas cookies in, and melt it down with a blow dryer. While the sling is still wet and pliable I slip the finger loop over a hook and stretch the whole thing out tight while rubbing it with a coarse cloth towel. I then singe the jute ones, lightly singe the hemp and no need to singe the mason cord or linen. The slings come out tight, clean and with lots of body like a whip. Try working your leather pouches the same way.

Add me on as your first disciple Fletch. I guess that makes you like Jesus. (Jesus, my Salvadorian gardener, he's Gnostic too but I'm not sure about the wax thing)
See, winking makes it Okay to say that...

Oh the crazy things I've seen with a wink after them. Sadly, Wax Gnosticism doesn't even rank in the top 10.

Maybe if you melted it a little bit. Besides, I think I would be uncomfortable being called Jesus, I prefer Rrrrramon...............

With a name like Rrrramon, you should be handing out relationship advice.

Similar to parachuting. The thrill outweighs the risk.

Sorry to interrupt this interesting dialogue
So do I understand correctly that the wax is mainly to stiffen and protect the cords?
