paleoarts' atlatls on this seasons 'Top Shot'

for fans of the show you already know that the atlatl will be featured on one of this seasons episodes. i had the distinct honor of producing the gear for it. my friend Todd (aka Jack Dagger) got me the gig and i made four atlatls and 150 darts for them. i'm still not sure exactly when the episode will air, but i can tell you that it will be an elimination challenge. here are some pics of the gear i made for them. two right handed paddle grip atlatls and two left handed as well as 60 of the 150 darts.

Oh la la la.

Congrats on the score, Top Shot is a good show and I'm sure they knew what they were doing when asking you to make the atlatls.

Wow, Chris! Congrats on getting your stuff on national television. 2 right handed atlatls and 2 southpaw or did you make extras just in case something happens to them?

Massi - WTF? It's called a sling. You use it to throw rocks farther and faster than you could otherwise. That's all.

thanks, guys  Smiley

the atlatl segment will be an elimination challenge so it's just between two people. at the time they ordered the gear they didn't know who would be participating in it so they had to have two righties and two lefties just in case. they initially wanted eight throwers and 400 darts! luckily, that got reduced to 4/150 but it still took me the better part of a month to produce. the atlatls i did in one day, the darts took me 22 days Tongue

the cool part is that i got to go up to the ranch and meet everyone (yes, even Cody) and after the season was over i got to buy back the darts at a drastically reduced price Wink

what's really exciting is that we are finally going to get some of the best slo-mo footage of darts in flight that have ever been recorded. the high speed camera work on the show is some of the best in the business.

This is great!!! It's about high time atlatls are featured on a popular show like this. Hopefully you'll br featured in the credits and your sales will go through the roof.

unfortunately, due to contractual agreements with certain advertisers, my name or company name will not appear in the credits. however my buddy Todd (Jack Dagger) did manage to sneak the word 'paleoarts' into his intro. now, whether or not this made it through editing niether of us know. in any case i still get bragging rights and can still promote my wares as 'seen on Top Shot'. this isn't the first time my stuff has been on TV. i've had gear in several History and Discovery Channel shows and even a couple of films, but this one will be the most watched i think.

Out of curiosity, what shows and films are these? I'd consider this a reason to watch those shows and films.

I can't remember the name of the program or what network it was on. I stumbled on it one afternoon while flipping through the channels. They took 8-10 men and women, put them in an alpine environment, Colorado/Montana maybe, took thier clothes and gave them skins to wear. They had to "survive" for 10 days. No one there knew about the flora or fauna, no one there seemed to have any pre-1800 skills, no one built anything substantial other than a hide covered stack of sticks to sleep in. They didn't seem to do much but sleep and complain about each other. Into the 5th day or so, a gentleman came in with a handful of atlatl. He showed them the basics and part of the group went out hunting. They were able to walk in close enough to a herd of elk, threw their darts into the mass and stuck one of the animals in the neck, eventually killing it. It was little interesting and tragic at the same time.

I agree, interesting and tragic. At the same time though that's probably how we did a lot of our hunting historically. Not clean or pretty, but when all you care about is not starving...
