Slings in carry-on baggage?
Nov 17th, 2011 at 11:21pm

I'm flying across the U.S. soon, and want to bring some slings with me ( Cheesyobviously). I'm not planning to check a bag, so I was wondering if anyone has flown with slings in carry-on bags, and if there have been any issues. Especially in the U.S., but I would be interested to hear all experiences. How about you fellows just back from Mallorca?

Thanks,
Matt

yep i have. if people ask just say it's a dog toy, although when i fly no one has ever cared (international and domestic flights). TSA probably doesn't care if it hasn't been used by the media/hollywood as a potential weapon.

Thanks, kid. Did you mean like, for throwing balls for the dog? I don't use it that way, but it could be for that. It's good that it has not been an issue for you, I hope I have the same experience. The next question is, what if I'm not just bringing (and explaining) one? It seems when one is addicted to slinging and slingmaking, one wants to take his entire stash on vacation to use and to show off.

It's a piece of string. No one outside of our little group knows otherwise, and it's hard to outlaw. TSA wont ask you about it unless you get the urge to sling a piece of the tarmac. Shocked

Massi - WTF? It's called a sling. You use it to throw rocks farther and faster than you could otherwise. That's all.

LOL

as for the tennis ball thing- it doesn't matter if you actually use it or not. simply by saying it's a dog toy, for throwing non lethal tennis balls that will not cause a second 9/11 nor would it be used for terrorist-like TSA restricted uses and purely for fun with man's best friend wihtout any al-quaeda agendas generally does the trick.

basically, describe it as something harmless if for some strange reason TSA is all fidgety the day your flying.

Perhaps you could just tell them up front. Call them tennis ball slings and have several tennis balls in your bag along with them and they will probably merely be curious rather than objecting.

Alternatively, if they're those lovely braided slings that you make then they're not 'weapons' at all, only beautiful artefacts which you're taking to exhibit somewhere. Be confident and friendly and why should anyone object?

As Aussie said. I carried a few slings and a one tennis ball in my hand luggage. They all were packed in a one small plastic bag. There were no problems and questions during security checks.

In the shape, structure and position of each stone, there is recorded a small piece of history. So, slinging them, we add a bit of our history to them.

When I went to Great Britain, I stopped in to security about a week before my flight and showed them and explained to them what they are. There was no problem. Besides, in the confined space of a plane, a sling is not the right thing to use if your going to take over a plane.

I fly for work most weeks. I carry slings through in my coat pocket, which goes through the xray. I dont carry on my person because I almost always get pat-downs.

lol it's the hair  Wink

you should be fine.
The rule with airline nazis is simple: say nothing unless asked.

Lets face it they believe you can hijack an airplane with a set of toenail clippers, while complely ignoring the fact that you have access to glass bottles once on board. So the less you draw to their attention - the better Smiley
Common sense has no place in modern airline 'security' - so best just not to mention anything unless asked. Then go with dog toy Smiley

Thank you, all, for the advice.  I feel better now, I think. I welcome any additional thoughts, and will share my experiences when I have a chance.

And remember to stay relaxed, it's not like you are carrying a weapon capable of throwing almost anything smaller than your fist at speeds high enough to kill a horse or an armored soldier from hundreds of yards away, oh wait....

Seriously though it's not illegal so don't treat it as if it was, They ususally look for the "nervous" type, so just be normal. I agree with the coat pocket thing too and if it's just in your carry on, no problem at all.

It is two pieces of cords and one piece of leather.. Untie .. and voila..  you have no sling anymore.

It´s harder with a braided one, though  Wink

Everything will be fine until a movie comes out with some muscular dude hurling projectiles with impossible accuracy, decimating his foes.  Remember what Bruce Lee did for the nunchaku.  Two sticks tied together with string giving you the ability to take over a small country.  After the movie comes out, you'll be carrying your slings "Papillon Style".  None of us want that.........................
