2 knew knives!

Here's 2 knives I made up in the past few days, the blades are made from beachglass, the handles and the stands are made from driftwood. I love the look of driftwood when you put a little varnish on it, you get great colors and patterns. I wish I could make bigger blades but they are big enough to be functional, you don't get much beach glass or ships ballast flint that is big enough to make anything larger than that. When I made up these blades I was able to make one that is much larger from a longitudinal shard from the side of a 1/4in. thick bottle, but it was pretty tricky as that got very fragile.
Nonetheless I've sold 5 of these over the summer, so I guess I shouldn't worry too much over size.

Luke, those look just like Basketweaver II knives.  Northern Mexico, Southwestern and Coastal US and Coastal and southern Central Canada.  It is an incrediably simpla and functional knife.  Yours look great and the stands really set them off.  Bill

Thanks, you can use any kind of glass, and even fine ceramics as well as flint, chert, quartz, obsidian etc.  The glass should be at least 1/4 of an inch thick or thicker, bottle bases from any type of bottle work great, they are both made from bottle bases I collected off the beach, though you can make even longer ones from lengthwise shards from the side of a thick bottle.  I have one that is maybe 4in. or so that I made that way.  If you want to learn to do flintknapping check out this website, http://paleoplanet69529.yuku.com/directory

Those knives are short, but still cool Smiley
I can imagine a couple of reasons to keep glass knives short Wink

They are about the size of a buck knife, perfect for skinning small to medium size game, like rabbits to deer.  They also work great as letter openers and really are a great decoration for a room or office, sit it on a desk, a mantle or a window sill.  They look beautiful when the light shines through them.

Absolutely beautiful work, Luke.  With the driftwood stand they're works of art.  I could see them sittling on a CEO's desk.
