An underarm throw, just lobbing a large rock in the general direction. I hate to admit it, he probably looks like what I looked like for a long time after I whacked myself, luckily, I was using a tennis ball. If he smacked himself or almost did, he would get very careful, very quick. And lets not forget rocks going in directions we didn't want, he may have made life quite exciting for the camera crew.

You should contact them and ask them to look at some of the many excellant videos you have done. Even if they don't use you, at least they will have an idea what it is suspposed to look like. Bill

Just think a couple of seconds of youtube perusal and they could have had something half decent.

Now, to be fair, that footage is part of the Arms in Action TV series, which was from 1997-98, I believe. So it predates slinging.org and youtube, and there would not have been nearly as much information on slings available then as there is now. And, although Thom Richardson's technique in the clip is perhaps not as good as others in my experience, his reproduction of the Lahun sling was certainly beautiful. An article of his, The Ballistics of the Sling, can be found on the home page if anyone was interested in reading about his slinging experiences, and the technique he demonstrated.

It seems he was aware of other slinging techniques, but his preference was for the whip technique in the video clip.

He's just tossing that stone like he would just want to discard it.When I rarely find such beautiful stones like that,I'm afraid to even sling them,and he's just tossing it Undecided

Sometimes when I have stones slipping out of the pouch,have more power than that Wink

Anyways,he did a good job for exercising half an hour before shooting the video.

Given the time the video was shot, I wouldn't be too hard on him. Amazing how fast we forget that YouTube etc. were not around even for much of the existence of this forum, let alone when that film was shot.

Yes, I am pretty sure that is Thom Richardson - and the technique presumably which led to the 'academically acceptable' ie. 'official' sling velocities of around 30m/s.

I thought it seemed quite a nice rhythmical throw - could have been a lot worse - but hardly a 'power' throw.

Now I mention it, here is a very brief video ostensibly illustrating the Chammorro (Guam) use of a sling. It struck me as unconvincing to the extent I didn't even post it Sad
