It's the high speed of spin that makes glande shaped missiles so effective.
You would not get significant penetration of glande into humans if it were not for the high rate of spin, and as the romans had specific instruments for removing leag sling bullets from people - we know penetration with lead glandes was common.
The spin rates you get with a glande and a good throw are probably easily as high as an electric drill. Not as much as a bullet fired with a rifled barrel firearm, but certainly it is s very significant effect.
Sorry, Old Chap, I've heard you make that claim before. Whilst I cannot prove it to be untrue I suspect you'd have a devil of a time proving it is.
Sure the gland is spinning rapidly, but it's also moving forward very rapidly so the ratio of spin to travel is really quite low. Even when drilling soft materials a drill advances only millimetres for every revolution, and then under power. A sling projectile has only a very small percentage of its kinetic enery due to rotation, nearly all is due to forward motion.
The spin is essential in keeping the gland flying point forward, exactly the same as a rifle bullet. This materially aids in accuracy, but I doubt it adds much to the striking force.
